Liu paid attention to the collection of first-hand materials in the front line and kept a close look on the development of the disease. While one of his students, Qu Xiaoyuan, a doctor from Shaanxi Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, was working voluntarily in Wuhan in February and March, Liu asked Qu to accumulate materials and test whether his understanding about the pneumonia was correct.
Lin died in 2012 at the age of 74 and was posthumously awarded the honorary title of "Outstanding Scientist Dedicated to National Defense-related Scientific and Technological Development" in 2013. He had spent 52 years working in the Gobi Desert in northwest China, participating in the nuclear tests there.
Liu also encouraged other means of transportation including ride-sharing to meet surging travel demand.
Liu says that "because academic performance is pretty much the only indicator of success, every parent disregards what the real strengths of their kids are. They just look at the test scores. They actually discourage the development of kids in any other direction other than the tests."
