This year marks not only the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China but also the establishment of the CPPCC.     The book consists of 142 important documents which are divided into three volumes. Some documents are being made public for the first time. BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's crude steel output would surely top 500 million tonnes this year, said Luo Bingsheng, vice chairman of China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) on Saturday.     In the first half, China produce 266.58 million tonnes of crude steel, up 1.23 percent over the same period last year. In June alone, the daily output was about 1.65 million tonnes on average.     Compared with an increasing production capacity, the country's steel enterprises saw declining profits and revenues in the first six months amid low steel prices resulted from weaken market demands.     According to statistics covered 71 of China's large-scale steel producers, total business revenue of them dropped 28.07 percent year on year to 955 billion yuan (139.82 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half. Profit decreased by 98.32 percent to 1.73 billion yuan.     China produced 500 million tonnes of crude steel last year, accounting for 38 percent of the world total production volume.

HONG KONG, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- China has made great progress in gender equality and empowering women in the past 60 years, well on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015, said a senior UN official on Saturday at the Asia Pacific Women Forum held in Hong Kong.     Khalid Malik, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and the UN Development Program resident representative in China, quoted Chairman Mao Zedong's famous remarks "Women holding up half of the sky" to review China's good will and determination in promoting gender equality.     He noted that the People's Republic of China has witnessed important progress since its founding nearly 60 years ago, with gender equality as the country's basic national policy and one of the core elements to pursue a harmonious society.     Six years away from the deadline of MDGs, China is now well on track for further progress to meet the goal in promoting gender equality, said Malik.     "There is almost no gender disparity to Chinese women's access to a living market, and there is much that the Asia-Pacific region can learn from China's lessons," he said.     The eight MDGs, set by world leaders at a UN summit meeting in 2000, also include relieving poverty, popularizing primary education, reducing child mortality and ensuring environmental sustainability.     As the Asia-Pacific region emerges stronger than any other one from the undergoing global financial crisis, he also believed the women in the region have a real prospect in redefining and strengthening their role in economy and society amid "a time of great changes".     "Women are the driving force to overcome poverty and hunger, fight illiteracy, prevent the spread of diseases and promote stability," he said.     More efforts were needed yet, Malik added. He urged both China and the whole region to eliminate even more bias towards empowering women and to bring the gender equality to a whole new level on the foundation of all the progress that has been made so far.

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin has called for deep recognition of the historic necessity and enormous advantages of China's political system of multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     The natural difference between the political systems of China and the West must be deeply recognized, said Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau at Thursday's meeting of the presidium of the CPPCC National Committee. BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday chaired a meeting on the national pollution survey and urged more efforts to protect environment.     China launched its latest nationwide pollution survey at the end of 2006.     Li said further work should be done to boost environmental protection and tackle serious pollution problems to boost sustainable development in China and improve people's living standards and quality. HONG KONG, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Bank of China (Hong Kong) said Thursday its half-year profit fell by 5.6 percent from a year earlier, dragged lower by falling interest income amid the deepening economic downturn.     The bank's net profit for the six months ending June 30 amounted to 6.69 billion Hong Kong dollars, down from 7.09 billion Hong Kong dollars in the same period last year.     However, the bank said it represented a major improvement against the net loss of 3.75 billion Hong Kong dollars in the second half of 2008, which can be attributed to the increase in operating income as well as the decrease in impairment charges on securities investments.     Net interest income decreased by 11 percent to 8.93 billion Hong Kong dollars as net interest margin narrowed by 27 basis points to 1.76 percent. But the net fees and commission income grew by 1.7 percent year-on-year to 2.95 billion Hong Kong dollars driven by the rebound of the local stock market in the first half of this year.     The bank's vice chairman and chief executive He Guangbei said the performance in the first half of this year reflected the progress the bank had made in regaining its growth momentum. As the turbulence and its knocks-on effects began to subside, the bank would pursue a prudent yet flexible development strategy in an environment of change and challenge.     He also said BOC (HK) would actively expand the RMB-related banking business as the sole Clearing Bank for Renminbi business in Hong Kong.

"And it was heartrending to see our people losing lives and properties in the riots."     "All of us felt grieved, and the bad guys were not willing to see the fact that we are living a happy life," Hashim Dawut responded.     "In Xinjiang, Uygurs and Hans are inseparable, and all the ethnic groups are inseparable, because we are a family," Wen said.     "And we should cherish the stability and development which did not come easy," he added.     "I will bring your words home," said Hashim Dawut.
