NAIROBI, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Somali pirates have released a fishing boat from Taiwan, China, and all of its crew held since April, a regional maritime official said Thursday."The Taiwanese ship was released this morning. The fishing vessel which has a crew of 30 from various Asian nationalities was seized in April last year," Andrew Mwangura, East Africa's coordinator of the Africa Seafarers Assistance Program, told Xinhua.The Win Far 161 was seized last April 4 near an island in the Seychelles, more than 1,100 kilometers off the coast of Somalia.The ship carried a crew of 30 -- 17 Filipinos, six Indonesians, five from the Chinese Mainland and two from Taiwan, China.Mwangura said 27 crew members were said to be safe, though a Chinese sailor and two from Indonesia died in captivity.The coordinator could not confirm whether a ransom was paid to secure the release of the 700-ton ship and crew.Piracy has been rampant off Somalia since the country slid into chaos after warlords toppled military dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.Somali pirates now hold at least seven ships and more than 160 crew members.The hijackings have prompted the international community to deploy security forces in the area to deter the pirates.

BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen earlier this month expressed his appreciation for Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's important and constructive role in the Copenhagen conference, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tuesday.Rasmussen made the remarks in a letter to Wen on Feb. 12, said spokesman Qin Gang at a regular press conference.Premier Wen on Jan. 29 wrote a letter in reply to Rasmussen concerning the Copenhagen Accord, reiterating China's support for the Accord and the country's climate change commitments.Wen said in the letter that the Copenhagen Accord which resulted from the UN climate change conference in the Danish capital last year laid the foundation for advancing international cooperation on climate change and enabled future negotiations to take place.Rasmussen replied on Feb. 12 that he fully agreed with Wen on his evaluation, saying that he was inspired by China's support for the Accord, Qin said.The Chinese government had reported its emission cuts progress to the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), reaffirming a reduction of carbon dioxide emission intensity per unit of GDP by 40 to 45 percent by 2020 against 2005 levels.Rasmussen welcomed the China's emission cuts progress. He also agreed with Wen on adhering to the main role of the UNFCCC in future negotiations, Qin said.China hoped Denmark, as chair of the Conference of UNFCCC Parties, would continue to play a positive role, Qin said, noting that the country would maintain contacts with Denmark.In Tuesday's press conference, Qin also responded to a question related to UN climate chief's announcement of resignation.Yvo de Boer has announced last week that he will resign his position as Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC as of July 1 this year.Qin said de Boer had contributed positively in organizing and serving the international negotiations on climate change since assuming his current post in 2006.China had cooperated well with the UNFCCC secretariat, and supported de Boer's efforts, Qin said. BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Monday urged local authorities to step up efforts to prevent forest and grassland fires as a severe drought put south China on a high fire alert.Authorities should beef up the supervision of fire sources, and respond scientifically to emergencies to curb major fires and casualties, and protect the public and forests and grassland, Hui said at a teleconference held by the State Council, or the Cabinet.A prolonged drought, which started last autumn, has hit southwest, south and parts of north China.According to the State Forestry Administration (SFA), from November to January, China reported 1,945 forest fires, which damaged 5,112 hectares of forests and killed two people.

KUNMING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has called for more efforts to fight Yunnan's worst drought in 60 years when visiting the province in southwestern China.He urged local authorities to ensure water supply for urban and rural residents and for agricultural uses.He also asked local authorities to take more measures to limit the spread of forest fires.Hui visited several rural households to know if they had enough water. He also inspected affected crops, reservoirs and forests during his visit to Yunnan from Wednesday to Friday.Yunnan's drought has resulted in water shortages for locals, livestock and crops.The dry spell started in the autumn 2009 and has also hit neighboring Guizhou Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.The seriousness, duration, areas affected and losses are rarely seen in history, the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) said late Friday in a statement on its website.The ministry urged all affected regions to "take all possible means" to minimize the damages of the drought.The ministry also asked local civil affairs authorities of the four hardest-hit regions to report, on a 10-day basis, the number of people affected by the drought, people suffering from drinking water shortage, and people in need of government aid.

BEIJING, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's exports may grow by 8 percent in 2010 but problems still existed with getting exports back to pre-crisis levels, according to a statement posted Monday on the website of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), quoting minister Li Yizhong.It was unlikely for China's exports to recover to pre-crisis levels in the short-term, Li said during a Sunday meeting attended by MIIT officials, attributing the slow rebound to rising international protectionism and the fact that Chinese manufacturers relied too much on overseas markets.The 8-percent growth forecast was still far below 2008's 17.2-percent increase, according to customs data.Despite overtaking Germany as the world's largest exporter, China saw its exports contract 16 percent year-on-year in 2009 as overseas demand slumped.Exports in January this year grew 21 percent on lower comparison bases a year ago due to the global economic downturn and less working days as the Lunar New Year holiday fell in January last year, said the General Administration of Customs earlier this month.Li also stressed that China should keep the yuan stable in a speech addressing the current domestic economic situation during the meeting, as international pressure on China to strengthen the yuan was intensified.
