BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- As typhoon Morakot gains momentum and churns toward China's mainland, provinces in coastal regions are busy bracing for its impact.     By 5 p.m. Thursday, the typhoon was located at 23.3 degrees north and 126.7 degrees east, about 780 kilometers away from Wenzhou, a major city in Zhejiang Province, meteorological authorities said. It was expected to land in the eastern Zhejiang or Fujian provinces between Saturday noon and Sunday morning. "As a result, the route of Morakot is not fully predictable."     He warned Morakot was likely to continue growing in strength and become a super typhoon.     China is frequently affected by tropical storms in summer. The most destructive one recently occurred in 2006, when super typhoon Saomai claimed more than 400 lives.

WASHINGTON, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The cooperation between the United States and China has never been so important as it is now, and the just-concluded U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) has provided a platform to reinforce common interests, a senior U.S. official has said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.     "We have broadened the dialogue ... and the S&ED is a new approach towards the U.S.-and-China relations," David Loevinger, Treasury executive secretary and senior coordinator for China Affairs and the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, told Xinhua on Tuesday night.     "There was a common understanding that U.S.-China cooperation and engagement on economic issues have never been so important because of the challenges that we face in the global economy and global financial market right now," said Loevinger.     He said he was struck by the fact that both sides have so much in common in the discussion.     "The U.S. and China have a very similar outlook on the global economy and adopted very similar policy response," said Loevinger, once a Treasury Department's Financial Attache in China. "Both U.S. and China act very quickly and aggressively on global economic crisis."     "The monetary and fiscal stimulus in both countries was among the most aggressive and most far-reaching of any major economy," he also noted.     However, during the dialogue, China also expressed its concern over the security of its heavy investment. So far, China has invested more than 1.5 trillion dollars in the United States government-issued securities.     "We are deeply concerned about the security of our financial assets in the United States," Zhu Guangyao, China's assistant finance minister, told Xinhua.     Wang Qishan, Chinese vice premier and co-chair of the S&ED, also urged the United States to protect China's assets during the dialogue.     Loevinger indicated that the United States understands China's concern and explained to the Chinese side the U.S. monetary and fiscal policies during the two-day dialogue, which ended on Tuesday.     "(Federal Reserve) Chairman Bernanke talked about the Federal Reserve's approach to U.S. monetary policy," Loevinger said, referring to an op-ed Bernanke published last week in the Wall Street Journal, in which he talked about tightening monetary policy to prevent the emergence of an inflation once economic recovery is assured.     "Bernanke discussed many of these issues with China," he added.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- China is to hold a National Day military and mass parade as well as an evening gala on Tian'anmen Square Thursday to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).     Following will be highlights of the once-in-a-decade grand celebrations:     -- Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao, will be on Tian'anmen Rostrum to observe the parade.     -- President Hu is to review line-ups of the tri-service People's Liberation Army (PLA), standing in an open-top home-made Red Flag limousine.     -- National flag raising ceremony will be held on Tian'anmen Square.     -- Military parade is expected to involve more than 8,000 people, and a total of 52 types of new weapon systems, including the PLA's missiles, airborne early warning and control aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and other sophisticated military hardware, will be shown.     -- Military paraders will march goose-step through the square in new-style uniforms initiated in 2007.     -- Women militia soldiers in purple skirts will march goose-step through Tian'anmen Square, holding submachine guns. Chinese athletes reaped 51 gold medals in the Beijing Olympics, ranking the first in the gold medal list.     -- About 60,000 people will dance to the song "I Love China" at the grandiose National Day evening gala, showcasing the country's ethnic harmony and development.     -- Fireworks, designed by renowned Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang who masterminded the firework display at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, will dazzle the night of the National Day.     -- About 4,000 performers will form a "light cubic" formation in the center of Tian'anmen Square at the gala. "I enjoyed learning different cultures from them."     On May 12, 2008, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Sichuan and neighboring Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, leaving more than 87,000 dead or missing and more than 370,000 injured.     Since 2008, two batches of more than 1,500 pupils from Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi have been invited to recuperate in Russia. BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Drought-hit regions in northern China are forecast to have moderate to heavy rain Wednesday and Thursday, the National Meteorological Center said Tuesday.     The regions include Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region where more than 200,000 livestock have died due to drought, Heilongjiang Province where 1.47 million hectares of farmland were hit by drought, Liaoning and Jilin provinces.     A severe drought has hit China's northern part, affecting 11.33million hectares of crops, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.     Among the total affected crops, 4.2 million hectares suffered serious drought and 1.07 million hectares dried up. About 3.9 million people and about 4.37 million livestock had difficulties getting water.     Yuan Zipeng, deputy director of the Liaoning provincial observatory, said the long-anticipated rain would "obviously" relieve the two-month-long drought that led to drinking water shortages for 792,200 people and 242,200 livestock in the province.     In order to increase the rainfall, the provincial bureau has prepared 1,269 rocket shells along with three aircraft to seed the clouds, Yuan said.     In Liaoning alone, 32 million hectares of farmland were hit by drought.     The water resources department in Inner Mongolia said 1.89 million people and 4.27 million livestock faced drinking water shortages. More than 200,000 livestock died as 71 percent of the region's pastures were severely hit by drought.     Qinggele, a herdsman in Bayan Zhuoer, Inner Mongolia, said his family had to use donkeys to carry water 15 km away.     Authorities in Inner Mongolia made artificial rain more than 1,000 times as the region saw the worst drought in the past 50 years. Officials also helped residents find more water sources and build more water-saving and irrigation projects.     Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged government agencies to place "top priority" on anti-drought efforts during his tour of the drought-hit regions in Liaoning, Inner Mongolia and Jilin on Monday and Tuesday.     Local governments were also urged to expand irrigation by speeding up construction of reservoirs and properly conducting artificial precipitation as "the drought took place in major grain production bases at the key maturity period for crops, which will greatly affect agriculture production".

BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's home prices continued to rise in July as bank loans surged and the country's economy improved.     Home prices in 70 large and medium-sized Chinese cities rose 1 percent in July from a year earlier, according to a joint statement issued Monday by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Bureau of Statistics. The prices climbed 0.9 percent from June, which saw a 0.8 percent gain over May.     Prices of new homes in the listed cities rose 0.3 percent year on year in July, and 1.1 percent from June. New home prices increased in 43 cities, including eastern Ningbo City and northwestern Yinchuan City, which saw growth rates of 6.4 percent and 5.4 percent respectively. Graphics shows China's housing sales price in July increased 1.0 percent year-on-year in 70 large and medium-sized cities, according to the State Bureau of Statistics on Aug. 10, 2009.     Prices fell in 26 cities. The northern city of Shijiazhuang and southern city of Shenzhen witnessed price drops of 5.5 percent and 4.6 percent in July year on year.     Second-hand homes in the 70 cities rose 3 percent in July from the same period last year and 0.9 percent from June.     In the first seven months, property investment hit 1.77 trillion yuan (259.44 billion U.S. dollars), up 11.6 percent year on year. The rise was1.7 percentage points higher than the first six months.     Over the same period, the floor area of property sold stood at 417.55 million square meters, up 37.1 percent year on year. The value of property sales jumped 60.4 percent to 1.96 trillion yuan.     Chinese banks lent a record 7.37 trillion yuan of yuan-dominated loans in the first half, exceeding the annual target of 5 trillion yuan.     The country's central bank announced earlier this month that new loans to home buyers in the first half rose by 263.3 billion yuan year on year to 479.3 billion yuan, boosted by an improving property market performance.     New credit for property developers increased by 221 billion yuan year on year to 403.9 billion yuan, said the central bank.     Premier Wen Jiabao reaffirmed over the weekend that the government's relaxed monetary policy would continue.
