BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- State President and Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee General Secretary Hu Jintao urged all Chinese people Tuesday to remember and study the morals and demeandour of former state president Li Xiannian (1909-1992).     Li won respect and love from the CPC, People's Liberation Army and people for his contribution to China's independence and the Chinese people's emancipation, China's socialist revolution, construction, reform and opening-up drive, and the building of the country into a modernized socialist nation that is prosperous, powerful, democratic and civilized, Hu said at a memorial meeting to mark Li's 100th birthday. Jia presided over the gathering.     Hu spoke highly of Li's prominent role in different periods of the CPC-led Chinese revolution, including the armed revolution of the 1920s-40s, the early development of New China in the 1950s-70s,and the epochal reform and opening-up drive launched in the late 1970s.     Li was born into a poor peasant family on June 23, 1909, in Huang'an, Hubei Province, central China. He took part in the CPC-led Peasants' Movement and joined the Party in the 1920s.     In 1927, Li led a group of peasants to join in the Huangma Uprising. Later, he became a member of the CPC-led Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army and played an important role in strategic battles and maneuvers of the Red Army.     During the Long March, Li supported Zhu De and other senior leaders in resolute struggle against the splittist activities of Zhang Guotao.     In China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45) and the Liberation War (1946-49) against the Kuomintang Regime, Li became a ranking officer in the CPC-led armed forces and fought a large number of major battles and established several revolutionary bases.     After 1949, the year the People's Republic of China was founded, Li served as vice premier for 26 years and played a big role in managing the economy. He was wrongly criticized and persecuted during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).     Starting in the late 1970s, as a core member of the second-generation of CPC leadership headed by Deng Xiaoping, Li assisted Deng in ushering in and carrying on the reform and opening-up drive.     In his final years in service, Li held top-level Party and state roles, including vice chairman of the CPC Central Committee, a Standing Committee member of the Political bureau of the CPC Central Committee, state president, and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The international community has continued to condemn the July 5 riots in Urumqi, the capital of China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which has left 192 people dead.     Religious leaders and some experts also voiced support for the joint efforts by the Chinese government and various ethnic groups to safeguard ethnic unity and social stability.     Regional leaders of two major Islamic organizations -- Nahdatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah -- in the Indonesian city of Surabaya said Islam advocates peace and opposes violence.     Muslims love peace, pursue peace and take real actions to maintain peace and oppose any violent and terrorist actions, they said Tuesday while meeting Wang Huagen, Chinese general consulate in Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city.     The two Islamic leaders also expressed the hope that social order in Urumqi could be restored soon.     Pierre Picard, a human geologist and China expert at the University of Paris, said he was shocked by the July 5 incident which was a violent crime orchestrated by foreign terrorists and separatist forces.     China has the right to take actions to maintain national stability and restore social order and the measures it has taken were appropriate, he told Xinhua.     No country in the world can tolerate attacks by terrorist forces, he added.     The Al-Riyadh newspaper, one of the leading newspapers in Saudi Arabia, said in a report on Tuesday that the July 5 incident in Xinjiang was a crime of violence that was premeditated and organized.     The unrest was not an ethnic issue nor a religious one, but a case against public order incited by a few separatists and mobs, it stressed.     Bahrain's Al-Ayam newspaper shared the view. In     a report published on Tuesday, it said the incident was by no means an ethnic or religious issue, but a grave violent crime involving beating,     smashing, looting and burning premeditated, organized and instigated by the separatist forces both in and outside China.     The purpose of the separatists is to sabotage ethnic unity and social stability in Xinjiang, said the report.     The local government of the autonomous region has adopted effective measures in accordance with law to stop the violent crimes in a bid to safeguard social stability and resume normal social order as well as protect local people's rights and interests, it said.     The report said that the Chinese government had introduced and carried out a series of ethnic and religious policies since the People's Republic of China was established.     China always sticks to the principle of protecting ethnic minorities equal rights and safeguarding ethnic solidarity, and is firmly opposed to ethnic discrimination and oppression of any ethnic group as well as any activities aimed at undermining ethnic unity, it said.     China has always valued the role played by Islamic countries and attached great importance to its friendly relations with them, the report said, adding that such relations will be further cemented through joint efforts by both sides.

YEKATERINBURG, Russia, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met here Monday night with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.     Hu said China has always striven, steadfastly and from a strategic and long-term perspective, to promote good neighborliness and friendly cooperation with India, an important neighbor of China and also a fast-growing emerging power.     The Chinese side is ready to work with the Indian side to maintain the sound momentum for development of the bilateral strategic and cooperative partnership, make greater efforts to implement the "10 strategies" reached between the leaders of the two countries, enhance mutual political trust and reciprocal cooperation in various fields, take into consideration each other's concerns and core interests, and strengthen coordination and cooperation on major international and regional issues, said Hu. The two sides should make concerted efforts to strengthen cooperation in this regard.     The fifth is to strengthen cultural exchanges. Both sides should make good planning and preparations for a series of activities, such as those marking the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties and concerning The Chinese Festival in India and the Indian Festival in China. Both sides will continue to receive each other's delegations consisting of young people, officials, and people from news media and different localities, promote friendly exchanges in various fields and at various levels through visa facilitation and increasing direct air flights.     On border issues, Hu expressed the hope that the two sides would continue to advance the negotiating process in the spirit of peace and friendship, equal consultations, mutual respect and mutual accommodation so that the border issues could be properly resolved at an early date.     Both sides should do their utmost to ensure that the border issues do not undermine the overall situation of bilateral ties, he said.     Before these issues are eventually resolved, both sides should make joint efforts for maintaining peace and tranquility along the border region, he said.     With the efforts of both sides, Hu said, the Sino-Indian strategic and cooperative partnership will see sound development and the growth of bilateral relations will bring benefits to the two peoples.     Singh said the two countries forged the strategic and cooperative partnership during his tenure as prime minister. The two countries share the desire to promote their bilateral ties and there are also potentials for them to cooperate on global and regional issues, he added.     Singh described economic cooperation as an important "pillar”of the overall bilateral relationship and said enhanced economic ties could     give an impetus to the development of bilateral ties.     On military-to-military exchanges, Singh said that steady growth in exchanges between the armed forces of the two countries is to enhancing mutual trust and mutual understanding.     He also said that India and China share common interests on such issues as global trade and investment, climate change and the reform of the international financial order and should strengthen consultation and cooperation in addressing these issues.     On border issues, he said the Indian government is seeking a solution that should be fair, reasonable and acceptable to both sides. Before the issues are finally resolved, efforts should be made to ensure peace and tranquility along the border region, he said.     India recognizes the Tibet Autonomous Region as part of the territory of the People's Republic of China and will not allow anyone to carry out anti-China political activities in Indian territory, he said.     He said a healthy and stable bilateral relationship serves the interests of the two countries and also conforms to the interests of the region and the world at large.     Hu and Singh are here to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the first meeting of BRIC, scheduled to be held in Russia's third largest city Wednesday.     Indian is one of the four observers of the SCO, a regional organization now groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. BEIJING, April 21 (Xinhua) -- China and Albania issued a joint statement here Tuesday in which they said they would boost their traditional friendship and bilateral cooperation in all fields.     The statement was issued after official talks between Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Albanian counterpart Sali Berisha in the Great Hall of the People during the afternoon.     The two countries vowed to increase mutual investment, encourage more business contacts and promote a balanced development of trade ties, the statement said.     China would support its competitive companies to invest in Albania and participate in the country's infrastructure construction, energy and mine exploitation, it said. TAIPEI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland business delegation signed deals to purchase Taiwan products worth more than 2.2 billion U.S. dollars after a four-day visit to the island, it was announced Thursday.     Orders involving 827 million dollars of products would be filled by July, and products worth of 1.4 billion dollars would be delivered by the end of this year, said Li Shuilin, head of the delegation.     On their shopping list are LCD (liquid crystal display) equipment, spare parts for mobile phones and computers, plastic and chemical products, textiles and handcrafts, he said.     The group, organized by the Mainland Association for Cross-Strait Economic and Trade Exchanges, comprised about 80 representatives of 35 companies, including IT and home appliance giants Lenovo, Haier, Changhong and ZTE.     Their buying spree was seen as a symbolic step to expand trade ties between the mainland and Taiwan and to offset the effects of the global economic downturn.     The mainland businesses held talks with more than 300 Taiwan firms in Taipei and Kaohsiung to learn more about their products and market potential in the mainland.     They also discussed how to use their reciprocal advantages to reinforce manufacturing capacities of both the mainland and Taiwan, Li said.     Also on Thursday, telecommunication industries on both sides of the Taiwan Strait agreed to tap mobile telecommunication markets, particularly the mainland's newly-launched 3G (third generation mobile telecommunication) market.     A total of 17 telecommunication service providers and 30 equipment manufacturers of the mainland were invited to attend a forum in Taipei this week.     Datang Telecom, a mainland telecommunication equipment vendor, signed an agreement on cooperation with Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). They will discuss the possibility of a pilot network in Taiwan using Datang's TD-SCDMA 3G mobile telecommunications standard.     "We see a lot of opportunities for cooperation as the mainland is fast developing its 3G market," said Liu Liqing, chairman of the China Association of Communications Enterprises.     Johnsee Lee, president of the ITRI, also said the discussions would help local equipment producers better understand the market potential and industrial standards in the mainland.

Hu is expected to attend the meeting.     Wu's visit coincides with a G8 environment ministers meeting that is to be held in Italy on May 22.     China and Italy have witnessed smooth development of bilateral ties in recent years. Berlusconi visited Beijing for the Asia-Europe summit last October.     Besides Milan, Wu is also to visit Rome, Florence and Venice. Italy is the final leg of Wu's three-nation Europe tour, which had already taken him to Russia and Austria. 

URUMQI, July 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top leadership has vowed to punish those responsible for Sunday's riot in the northwestern Xinjiang region in accordance with the law and to educate those taking part in it after being deceived by separatists. Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, said in his tour of the autonomous region on Friday that all available efforts should be mobilized to "win the tough war of maintaining Xinjiang's stability."     The Party's top official in charge of law enforcement stressed that efforts should be made to "resolutely implement" the spirit of the Political Bureau meeting on Wednesday night, and use "tough measures" to ensure stability.     President Hu Jintao on Wednesday night convened a meeting of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau to discuss the deadly Xinjiang riot. He returned to Beijing Wednesday afternoon.     The meeting said the government would "firmly crack down on serious crimes, including assaults, vandalism, looting and arson."     The Standing Committee ordered authorities to "isolate and crack down on the tiny few" and "unify and educate the majority of masses."     "Instigators, organizers, culprits and violent criminals in the unrest shall be severely punished in accordance with the law," it said. "Those taking part in the riot due to provocation and deceit by separatists, should be given education."     Hu's stance in handling the riot was echoed by Zhou, one of the nine Political Bureau Standing Committee members, who arrived in the region Thursday afternoon.     Zhou said Thursday that the government and the Party would crack down hard on violence, severely punish the outlaws in accordance with the law, so as to protect the lives and property of people of all ethnic groups, safeguard ethnic unity and restore normal social order in the region as soon as possible.     The country's top police officer Meng Jianzhu was the first senior official from the central government to arrive in the Xinjiang region.     When visiting residents injured by the rioters and family members of those victims in Urumqi on Wednesday, the state councilor and public security minister urged "no leniency in the punishment of thugs who took part in the Urumqi riot".     Meng said leading rioters should be punished "with the utmost severity" and those taking part in the riot, who were provoked and cheated by separatists, should be given persuasion and education.     "All the thugs in the riot should be severely punished in accordance with law, otherwise we will let the victims and their relatives down," Meng repeated his comment on Thursday while visiting residents in Urumqi and a funeral parlor to mourn the Armed Police and other victims of the riot.     Senior Chinese leader He Guoqiang also stressed social harmony and stability on Wednesday.     He, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a two-day visit to Gansu Province, which neighbors Xinjiang.     "The recent violence in Urumqi... has again alerted us to the importance of social stability. It is our top priority," he said.     He urged Party and government departments at all levels to crack down on the acts of sabotage by hostile forces both at home and abroad, in order to ensure national and ethnic unity and social stability.     The Party's top publicity official Li Changchun on Wednesday called for redoubled efforts to improve education on patriotism and ethnic unity, to create a favorable atmosphere for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Li, also one of the nine Political Bureau Standing Committee members, made the remarks during a three-day visit to the northwestern province of Qinghai, adjacent to Xinjiang.     "In regions inhabited by ethnic minorities, patriotic education must be combined with education on ethnic unity," he said, to let the public understand that "ethnic unity comes with blessings while disunity with woes".
