DATONG, Shanxi, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Monday called for renovating the hovels in urban areas and at state-owned factories and mines across the country to better the livelihood of needy people.     Renovation of all squatter homes in cities and at state-owned factories and mines should be completed in the next fives years. Those hovels at state-owned forest zones, reclamation areas and coal mines will be renovated within three years, Li told a national meeting.     Different kinds of government funds will be used in the renovation work, and private investment will be encouraged, Li said, adding that favorable tax and land policies will be implemented.     He said the renovation efforts should be open and transparent and respect the wishes of the broad masses. Efforts should be made to avoid corruption.     Li said China will promote the building of low-rent houses to meet people's basic needs for housing.     By the end of 2008, China has 11.48 million families living in hovels, 7.44 million of which live in cities, 2.38 million nearby state-owned plants and mines, 1.66 million in forest zones and reclamation areas.

FUKUOKA, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said Wednesday his visit to Japan had "a positive result" and "achieved what he had expected."     Xi made the remarks before leaving the southern Japanese city of Fukuoka, the last stop of his Japan visit, for South Korea to continue his four-country Asia tour.     During a meeting with Fukuoka Prefecture Governor Wataru Aso, Xi said he held fruitful talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama in Tokyo and exchanged views with representatives of all Japanese circles. The governor said he hoped China and Fukuoka would further environmental protection cooperation.     Xi arrived in Fukuoka Wednesday afternoon from Tokyo. He will also visit Myanmar and Cambodia later in his tour.

BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday again expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, urging the U.S. to respect China's core interests and withdraw related arms sales plan.     "The U.S. arms sales to Taiwan infringe upon China's security interest as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and interfere with China's internal affairs," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu in a statement.     Jiang made the comments in response to a reporter's question on U.S. government approval for Raytheon Company to sell 1.1 billion U.S. dollars of Patriot antimissile system to Taiwan.     "We have raised solemn representations to the U.S. side," said Jiang. "We urge the U.S. to stop arms sales to Taiwan to avoid undermining China-U.S. cooperation."     Jiang said, "We urge the U.S. to clearly recognize the severe consequences of arms sales to Taiwan, reject the cold war mentality, and adhere to the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, especially the principles established in the Joint Communique on Aug. 17, 1982."     The "Aug. 17 communique" stated that the U.S. would not seek to carry out a long-term policy of arms sales to Taiwan, and intended to gradually reduce arms sales.     "We also persuade the Raytheon Company to stop pushing or participating in arms sales to Taiwan, and refrain from doing anything that harms China's sovereignty and security interest," Jiang said.

ROME, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Monday proposed a four-point action plan aimed at eradicating world hunger in his address to a world summit on food security.     Stressing the fact that the financial crisis has worsened the plight of the poor and the hungry, the Chinese vice premier said the summit, hosted at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters here, was "of special significance to world food security, global economic recovery and sustainable development."     In order to overcome the "dual pressure of an international financial crisis and a global food crisis," the first suggestion of the Chinese government was to increase input and raise food production by investing more in agriculture, build up the capability to resist natural disasters and strive for greater self-sufficiency. During the three-day event more than 60 heads of state and government will gather to discuss measures to eradicate hunger and ensure food security.

BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- In cold weather, 45 Japanese war orphans revisiting China to thank their Chinese foster families received a warm welcome in Beijing.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met them, mostly in their seventies, in the Zhongnanhai compound Wednesday. Premier Wen invited the orphans to Zhongnanhai for talks and also accompanied them on a visit to the former residence and office of the late Premier Zhou Enlai inside the compound, who were much concerned about the war orphanage issue. BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's anti-graft chief He Guoqiang on Tuesday urged discipline and supervision authorities to press ahead with the building of a clean government and strengthened efforts in corruption prevention.     He, secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said in a meeting that efforts should be made to handle people's complaints and embrace innovation in the establishment of anti-corruption mechanism.     He asked discipline and supervision authorities to combat extravagance, intensify crackdown on the practice of "small coffer", which refers to fund, securities and assets that should be but fail to be listed into the account books of CPC and government organizations in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.     He also called for authorities to make public Party affairs, especially at grassroots organizations, and investigate and prosecute corruption cases.     Efforts should be made to expand channels for the general public to be involved in anti-corruption endeavor, said He, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday China and the United States should make joint efforts to push forward cooperation on clean energy and climate change in a substantial way.     Wen said such cooperation is important work and in the interests of both countries and the world. He said the two countries should advance cooperation in this area to bring benefit to the human beings and future generations.     Wen made the remarks when meeting with participants of the Strategic Forum for U.S.-China Clean Energy Cooperation that began in Beijing Wednesday.
