BEIJING, May 30 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam will complete erecting markers along their land border by year end, a visiting Vietnamese leader said here on Friday.     In talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Nong Duc Manh, Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee general secretary, reaffirmed efforts to meet this deadline set in 1999. China and Vietnam signed a treaty in December that year delineating their 1,350 kilometers of frontier. They officially started to plant land markers in 2002.     The two countries finished their latest round of talks on land border demarcation in Beijing last week, vowing to speed up the work. According to the list, Vietnam will provide 150 tents and 10,000 boxes of milk to the areas hit by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12.     After inspecting the honor guards of the People's Liberation Army, Hu and Manh held a two-hour talk in the Great Hall of People.     The two reviewed the traditional friendship forged by the older leaders in the last century. They hailed the rapid growth of bilateral ties in recent years, citing Sino-Vietnam cooperation in trade, rule of country, regional and international issues, as well as problems left over from history.     Hu proposed China and Vietnam seek stronger ties in culture, education, science and technology, agriculture and youth exchange.     Manh echoed Hu's view, reiterating his country's efforts to work more closely with China in various fields.     Hu called for an early blueprint outlining a five-year trade cooperation between the two countries.     In response, Manh encouraged Chinese businessmen to invest in big projects in Vietnam and help his country develop in a sustainable manner.     Hu suggested a proper solution to existing issues between the countries on the basis of friendly consultation and mutual benefit.     Manh shared Hu's view and said the two countries should communicate promptly about their concerns.     They also exchanged views on party building and international issues.     After the talk, Hu and Manh witnessed the signing of several bilateral deals on protection and quarantine of animals and plants, as well as in other fields.     During Manh's four-day tour, he will also visit the east Jiangsu Province.

BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Thursday night it had launched a level-three flood control emergency response mechanism to cope with Typhoon Kalmaegi.     Tropical storm Kalmaegi escalated to typhoon level on Thursday and was expected to be reinforced and land the coast areas in east China's Zhejiang and Fujian provinces on Friday, according to the headquarters. Heavy storms are likely to hit the coast cities in Zhejiang, the provincial meteorological authority said Thursday.     It is also expected to bring heavy rain to Quanzhou, Xiamen and Zhangzhou in Fujian in the next two days.     The heavy rain would continue in Fujian until this weekend, according to the weather services.     Flood-control, offshore fishery and marine authorities in Fujian, Zhejiang and Shanghai have sent out warnings for early preparations against the storm. Ships and boats are advised to return to ports.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The spacewalk performed by Chinese taikonauts Zhai Zhigang Saturday afternoon marks a major breakthrough in China's space program, Chinese President Hu Jintao said.     Hu talked with the trio taikonauts at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center for the Shenzhou-7 mission at 6:35 p.m. Saturday, when he inquired the physical conditions of the three taikonauts.     "Your country and your fellow citizens thank you for your devotion to the space program," he said.     He congratulated the trio over the success of the spacewalk, and encouraged them to continue the efforts for a "complete success.     Zhai Zhigang was assisted during the spacewalk by Liu Boming in the orbit module. China is the third country in the world to accomplish the feat after the United States and Russia. "How did you feel like in space?", President Hu asks spacewalker    Chinese President Hu Jintao asked Chinese taikonauts what it was like walking in space in a conversation with them after the trio successfully realized the country's first-ever space walk on Saturday.     "How did you feel like in space after exiting the module?" asked smiling Hu, who was talking on a phone that connected him at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC) with astronauts on the spacecraft Shenzhou-7.     "I felt superb," answered Zhai Zhigang, who carried out about 25 minutes of extra-vehicular activity (EVA) about 343 km above the earth after floating out of the Shenzhou-7 cabin on Saturday afternoon.     "The process of taking on the Feitian spacesuit went smooth," said Zhai, looking confident and radiant on the screen at the BACC. "In the vast space, I felt proud of our motherland."      Hu congratulated the astronauts on the successful feat and encouraged them to carry on efforts to fulfill the mission.     "The thing I most want to know is how are you feeling now and how is your work going," Hu asked the trio.     "We feel well," said Zhai. "We conducted the space scientific tests as planned and the EVA went smoothly."     Hu hailed the spacewalk as a sign of the country's progress in space scientific technology.     "You have made outstanding contribution to our country's space project," said Hu. "The country and the Chinese people are grateful to you."     At 4:43 p.m. (0843 GMT) on Saturday, Zhai slipped out of the orbital module of Shenzhou-7 in a head-out-first position, wearing a 4-million-U.S.dollar homemade Feitian space suit.     China's first-ever spacewalk marked a remarkable progress in the country's ambitious space program, which will eventually lead to the establishment of a permanent space station. BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have ordered that supplies for the summer harvest be guaranteed amid reports of shortages in some areas.     Following their order, the State Council has asked local governments and related enterprises to prioritize supplies such as diesel, the fuel for farm vehicles, to take advantage of the best time for the ongoing wheat harvest.     Tight supplies of diesel were reported in some areas since the country began to reap the wheat crop in May as refiners experienced losses resulting from domestic prices that were kept below the spiraling international prices. UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Thursday urged the international community, especially developed nations, to speed up intensive efforts to realize the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).     CHINA'S CONTRIBUTION     Wen made the calls in his address to the UN high-level event on the MDGs. He told the meeting China has honored its commitments to the MDGs by dramatically reducing the number of Chinese living in poverty and by providing assistance to least developed countries.     China, the most populous country in the world, has accelerated development mainly through its own efforts and through reform and opening-up since 1978, and has "brought down the number of people in absolute poverty from 250 million to 15 million in less than 30 years," he said.     The nation's free compulsory education, medical care for 800 million farmers, and governance at various levels have all witnessed substantial progress, the Chinese premier said. The first and foremost development goal should be economic, with educational, cultural and social development also high on the agenda, he added.     He urged respect for the right of all countries to choose their own development paths suited to their national conditions, and called for efforts to resolve regional conflicts and ethnic strife through peaceful means.     On international assistance in eliminating poverty, Wen said developed countries in particular should assume the responsibility of helping underdeveloped countries.     "Assistance should be provided selflessly, with no strings attached. It is particularly important to increase assistance for least developed countries and regions," he said.     Wen proposed that donor countries double their donations to the World Food Programme in the next five years and that the international community do more to cancel or reduce debts owed by least developed countries and provide zero-tariff treatment to their exports.     Efforts should also be made to improve the working mechanisms for the development goals in the Millennium Declaration and coordinate the functions of international organizations to jointly overcome the difficulties facing developing countries, he proposed. Ninety-five percent of products from these countries will also enjoy zero-tariff treatment in the Chinese market, the premier said.     China will also increase agricultural technology support and provide more agricultural training opportunities for developing countries, he said.     Over the next five years, developing countries will get 10,000 more scholarships from China, along with some training programs provided exclusively for African teachers. China will also fully staff and equip the hospitals it builds for African countries and help train their medical staff.     Also in the next five years, China will develop 100 small-scale clean energy projects for developing countries, including small hydropower, solar power and bio-gas projects, the premier said.     Wen arrived in New York Tuesday morning for a three-day visit. He attended the annual high-level debate of the UN General Assembly Wednesday as well as Thursday's UN MDGs summit meeting, and held talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and leaders of some countries.

SHANGHAI, April 16 (Xinhua) -- A press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry said here Wednesday that the six-nation talks on Iran's nuclear issue had reached an "important consensus" to formulate a plan to restart negotiations on Iran's nuclear issue.     The press release said that the attendant parties had profound and constructive discussions on the next steps, however, it did not offer any further information about what the consensus was. Officials from China, United States, Russia, Britain, France, Germany and the Council of European Union gather in Shanghai to discuss a plan to restart negotiations on Iran's nuclear issue April 16. The involved parties all agreed to maintain close communication and consultation in an effort to continue their discussions on some unsolved issues concerning the plan, the press release added.     At the invitation of Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister He Yafei, officials from China, United States, Russia, Britain, France, Germany and the Council of European Union gathered in Shanghai to discuss a plan to restart negotiations on Iran's nuclear issue.     However, the meeting was overshadowed by Tehran's latest defiant moves, by announcing that the country had tested a new advanced centrifuge and started to install 6,000 new centrifuges at Natanz nuclear plant. "We remain ready to negotiate future arrangements, modalities and timing ... once the conditions for negotiations have been established."

LANZHOU, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Inspectors had found poisonous chemical in the Sanlu infant formula produced by one of its partner producers in northwest China's Gansu Province, an official said on Sunday.     Two out of the 12 samples randomly selected from the Sanlu milk powder produced by the Haoniu Dairy Co., Ltd. in Jiuquan City had tested positive for melamine, said Xian Hui, vice-governor of Gansu.     "The products of Haoniu have been sealed up," he said.     The test was conducted after the Sanlu Group, a leading Chinese dairy producer based in northern Hebei Province, admitted that it had found some of its baby milk powder products were contaminated with melamine, a chemical raw material strictly forbidden by the country to be used in food processing.     As of Saturday, a total of 432 babies throughout the nation have been sickened with kidney stones after drinking the contaminated milk powder.     Haoniu was founded in 2002 with the registered capital of 51 million yuan (7.45 million U.S. dollars). Its production was in line with the Sanlu standard and its products use the Sanlu trademark.     As of Saturday night, Gansu has reported 102 cases of infant kidney stone caused by the Sanlu milk powder. Two babies have died, Xian said.     The province has so far seized altogether 164,000 packs of Sanlu milk powder.
