XI'AN, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has urged the country's college students to find grassroots jobs in less developed regions as the economic downturn increases pressures in employment market.     Visiting Xi'an, capital of central Shaanxi Province, from Friday to Sunday, Wen said employment was one of the government's priorities for the sake of the country's economy and for the future of individuals.     "College students, laid-off workers and migrant workers waiting for jobs are my biggest concern," Wen told job hunters at an employment center.     He encouraged graduates from universities and colleges to find work in grassroots regions, and called on employers to create more jobs.     Since the second half of last year, the government has implemented a series of policies to create jobs. The State Council, or Cabinet, also decided to give living allowances to graduates who went to the central and western regions for internships.     Everyone should have a resolute belief that they should try their best no matter what their job was, Wen told students at Xi'an Jiaotong University. Wen paid a visit to Xi'an from June 5 to 7During a visit to a village in the city's outskirts, he said the government would promise the country's farmers higher incomes by raising the average procurement price of wheat by 0.1 yuan per 500g.     When the market price went up, sell the products to the market, when it went down, sell them to the government, Wen told farmers.     Wen also went to a main production base of BYD Company Ltd., a Hong Kong-listed indigenous auto maker specializing in electric-powered technologies.     Wen got into a new hybrid vehicle using gas and electricity and encouraged the company to achieve more independent technological breakthroughs.     He said the government's policy of development of western regions had proved successful over the past 10 years.     Governments at all levels should continue the policy and formulate more support measures to improve living standards for people in western regions, Wen said.

BRUSSELS, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Senior officials and scholars from the European Union (EU) and China held a conference here, urging the two sides to enhance cooperation dedicated to seeking a global solution to the financial crisis.     "After the financial crisis hit us, we stood closer, supported each other and worked together for an early recovery of our economy and that of the world. We become tightly bound more than ever before," Chinese ambassador to the EU Song Zhe said in a keynote speech at the conference in the European Parliament on Monday.     "We have every reason to cooperate," Song said, adding China and the EU have converging interest and share common responsibility.     Sino-EU relations has experienced slight derailing last year, as China postponed a summit with the EU due to French President Nicolas Sarkozy's decision to meet the ** Lama when France held the EU presidency. Relations appeared back on track in the face of the global financial crisis.     Early this year, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Europe on a Journey of Confidence. Later during the G20 summit in London early this month, President Hu Jintao met a number of European leaders to consolidate mutual trust.     In an effort to build a joint front against the financial and economic crisis, a trade and investment delegation from China last month struck multi-billion-U.S.-dollar deals with European companies to boost trade.     Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan is scheduled to visit Brussels next week for high-level economic dialogues with EU counterparts.     The 11th China-EU Summit will be held in Prague in mid-May, as the Czech Republic is holding the current EU presidency.     The EU is the biggest organization of developed countries and China is the biggest developing country, Song said, adding bilateral relationship takes on greater global and strategic importance.     Antonie Quero-Mussot, deputy head of cabinet of EU Commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, noted that cooperation between the EU, China and beyond is a necessary condition for a solution to the global financial crisis.     "Without the dialogue not only between the EU and China, but also between all the major economies... there will not be a solution to the crisis," he said.     His remark was echoed by Mei Zhaorong, former president of Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.     "We can not solve the problem alone but have to work together," Mei said at the conference.     He also downplayed the possibility of a G2 framework, under which the United States and China are expected to have a joint central role of leading the world out of the crisis.     "We are not of the opinion that we alone with the U.S. can solve the problem," Mei said, "I do not think Europe like that opinion either."     "I think the current form of G20 are far better. We should look at developing countries and emerging economies," he added.

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's ethnic culture is an important component of the Chinese culture, has made enormous contribution to the formation and development of the Chinese Nationality, and has been a valuable spiritual treasure shared by the Chinese Nationality.     This was remarked by Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, at a national work conference on ethnic culture, which opened here Friday. He pledged to send the voices of the Party Central Committee and the State Council to millions of homes of the minority people, so as to enrich the spiritual and cultural life of ethnic groups.     Great efforts will be made to promote international exchanges of the ethnic culture, so as to increase the competitiveness and impacts of the Chinese culture, Li said.     He called for further strengthening and improving the Party leadership on the work of ethnic culture and making efforts to build up a massive and high-quality group of ethnic cultural workers.     Also present at the meeting were three members of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, including Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, CPC Central Committee Secretariat Member Liu Yunshan, and State Councilor Liu Yandong.     The conference, the first of its kind in the country, was attended by provincial officials from across the country in charge of the matter, as well as officials from some central departments concerning ethnic affairs, culture, media and cultural heritage.

MOSCOW, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Senior representatives on security issues from the BRIC countries met in Moscow on Friday ahead of an upcoming summit on relations and cooperation within the bloc.     Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo briefly commented on the current international situation and called for enhanced cooperation from the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China - in dealing with major global and regional issues. BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao stressed the importance of promoting domestic consumption and independent research and development during a three-day inspection tour of the central Hunan Province, which ended Sunday.     Wen said the key to a sound economic future lay in continuing to "unswervingly" implement the government's policies to deal with the international economic downturn.     Companies should increase investment in research and development and better utilize science and technologies to "foster new economic growth points," he said.     Local governments, meanwhile, should develop energy-efficient and environment-friendly industries and put priority on a recycling and green economy, he said. BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Han Seung Soo described Friday the rapid growth of bilateral ties with China as "unprecedented".     "We have witnessed over five million ROK and Chinese people visit each other's country and the two-way trade volume expand 26 times bigger during the 17 years since ROK and China forged a diplomatic relationship", Han said. Han made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua on the sideline of a spring conference of the Institute of International Finance in Beijing.     He said being neighbors, cultural similarity and friendship between the two peoples offered a solid foundation for the two nations to foster ties.     China and the ROK agreed to upgrade their "comprehensive and cooperative partnership" to "strategic cooperative partnership" in May, 2008 during the ROK president Lee Myung-bak's first visit to China. After the test, it also fired some short-range missiles.     "The status of a non-nuclear peninsula is not only a must for the peace and stability on the peninsula, but also for that of East Asia and the world," Han said, expressing his hope that China, which chairs the six-party talks, could continue to play its positive and constructive role.     Launched in 2003, the six-party talks grouped China, DPRK, ROK, the United States, Russia and Japan. The talks have been stalled since the top negotiators last met in Beijing last December.

WASHINGTON, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the U.S. mortgage giant company was found dead as a result of an apparent suicide incident, said police on Wednesday. According to police, David Kellermann, the Freddie Mac's acting chief financial officer and senior vice president, was found hanging himself at the basement of his house in Vienna, Virginia, early in the morning.
