KABUL, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- A China-bound Afghan plane with Kam Airlines landed on the airport of Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan Sunday night, said sources of Kabul International Airport.     An official in Kabul International Airport who was reluctant to disclose his name said the plane scheduled from Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan, to Urumqi of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has already landed on Kandahar airport.     "The plane would return to Kabul after two hours," he added. ISLAMABAD, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said here Friday that he is proud of Pakistan's brotherly relationship with China and wishes the Chinese around the world well.     Zardari was the chief guest at the National Day reception hosted by Chinese Ambassador Luo Zhaohui at the Chinese embassy.     Replying a question by Xinhua on his arrival, Zardari said, "For the Chinese around the world, I wish them well. I wish them their independence and I applaud the success."     He also said, "I'm proud of the friendship which we have with China. And I'm proud of our brotherly relationship. And I'm with them in this moment of happiness. The people of Pakistan share the moments of happiness with the people of China."     Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Tariq Majid, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir, Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, government officials and senior diplomats from other embassies based in Islamabad were present at the reception.     The guests watched dances, songs and acrobatics performed by Chinese troops. At the end of the performance, chief guests and the Chinese ambassador went on the stage to greet the performers and had a group photo with them. 

URUMQI, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Seven hundred and eighteen people have been detained for being implicated in the Urumqi riot on July 5 which left 197 people dead and more than 1,600 injured, Urumqi City police chief Chen Zhuangwei said Tuesday.     Chen, head of the Public Security Department of Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, said evidence collection had been a heavy load for the city's police force. It had involved examinations at the crime scenes and DNA evaluations, but it had been carried out swiftly. BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Russian Prime Minister Putin said here on Tuesday that Russia and China are working on a huge oil and gas cooperation project.     In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, Putin said the two countries have signed a 20-year oil supply agreement and laid more than 2,000 kilometers of crude oil pipelines for this. It was the name given to the illegal practice of getting items across the border without official customs approval.     The illegal practice would make the government unable to supervise domestic industries and lead to bankruptcies and unemployment, which might cause more troubles to the society against the backdrop of the financial crisis, he said.     Putin called upon the two countries to establish a set of unified rules, which would be obeyed by both sides, so as to achieve a just, sound and civilized mechanism of cooperation.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China resolutely opposes U.S. move to start anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations into seamless steel pipes imported from China, the Ministry of Commerce(MOC) said.     The current hardships facing the U.S. steel industry was because consumption and demand waned after the financial crisis. "Blindly blaming Chinese imports of dumping or subsidies is lack of factual bases, which China strongly opposes," MOC announced in a statement on its website Saturday.     The statement came after U.S. Department of Commerce said Wednesday that it had initiated anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations at the request of the U.S. Steel Corporation, V&M Star LP, TMK IPSCO and the United Steelworkers (USW).     The U.S. petitioners requested a 98.37-percent anti-dumping duty against the Chinese imports and additional countervailing duties to offset what they allege are Chinese government subsidies.     The case was the seventh such investigations this year launched by the U.S. Department of Commerce against Chinese imports that included claims of both dumping and subsidies, MOC said.     Resorting to trade protectionism would not solve the real problem, instead it would hurt the interests of U.S. downstream steel businesses as well as bilateral trade, it said.

MACAO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Macao Special Administrative Region(SAR) Legislative Election General Auditing Committee announced the official results of the election of the fourth Legislative Assembly of Macao on Tuesday night.     In line with the Basic Law, the new legislature is composed of 29 seats including 12 directly-elected seats, 10 indirectly-elected seats, and seven others which will be appointed by the SAR's chief executive.     A total of 122 candidates from 16 groups contested in the direct elections, while the indirect elections did not take place since only 10 candidates have been fielded by the four constituencies involved for the 10 seats.     Eight of the 12 candidates who won the direct elections were veteran lawmakers that have served their terms in the legislature, which includes Kwan Tsui Hang, Chan Meng Kam, Ng Kuok Cheong, Angela Leong On Kei, Jose Maria Pereira Coutinho, Lee Chong Cheng, Ung Choi Kun, and Au Kam San were the winners of the direct elections, while Ho Ion Sang, Mak Soi Kun, Chan Wai Chi and Melinda Chan Mei Yi become the new faces in the legislature.     For the part of indirect elections, the list of winners comprises Ho Iat Seng, Kou Hoi In, Fong Chi Keong, and Cheang Chi Keong of the industrial, commercial and financial sector; Lau Cheok Va, Lam Heong Sang of labor sector; Chui Sai Cheong and Leonel Alberto Alves of professional sector; Vitor Cheung Lup Kwan and Chan Chak Mo of social, cultural, educational and sports sector.     The election of the fourth term of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR officially started Sunday morning. The authorities delayed announcing the results of the legislative election because6,539 ballots were found to be spoiled, the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs committee said Monday.     Some 149,006 of the total 249,886 registered voters cast their ballots during the polling period, but 6,539 of these ballots were deemed as invalid, according to the SAR's Legislative Election Affairs Committee.     This year's voter turnout stood at 59.9 percent, compared with 58.39 percent in the previous legislative election in 2005.     The results of the legislative election still need to be submitted to the SAR's Court for final approval, and the confirmed results will be published on the SAR's Official Gazette on Sept. 30 at the latest.

BEIJING, Aug. 5 -- Chinese steel mills would prefer to import more iron ore from Brazil rather than Australia after the detention of four Shanghai-based employees of multinational miner Rio Tinto on charges of commercial espionage, according to data specialist ASXMarine. Spot iron ore vessel bookings from Brazil to China surged to a record 39 in July, from 24 in the previous month, Reuters quoted the data from ASXMarine.     Vessel bookings from Australia's main iron ore ports to China dropped to 31, down from 40 compared to the previous month and the lowest reading since February after the Rio Tinto scandal. Office in Shanghai, east China.    Chinese steelmakers have begun to hold their imports from Australian miners and are switching to Brazilian ore instead, domestic ports have witnessed.     Zang Dongsheng, deputy general manger of Rizhao Port Group, China's largest iron ore port which accounts for a fifth of the country's iron ore deliveries, said some of his customers have reduced their orders from Australia and turned to Brazil. But the exact figures would be available only in September as shipments from Brazil and Australia would be delayed by one or two months.     China's main ports received 56.5 million tons of iron ore in July, up 35 percent from the same period last year, the Ministry of Transport said yesterday.     Iron ore imports rose 29.3 percent year on year, to 297 million tons, in the first half of this year, while traders imported 131 million tons, up 90.4 percent from last year.     The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said last Friday that excess iron ore imports had distorted the demand-supply situation and hampered its position at negotiations with global miners on new long-term benchmark prices.     It also said foreign iron ore suppliers promoted massive selling on the cash market, leading to huge stockpiles and urged to limit import licenses.     However, the iron ore import figures in July reflected orders in May as it takes more than a month to deliver ore from Australia and Brazil, said Zang from Rizhao port.     Chinese steel mills started to reduce orders ever since CISA rejected the 33-percent cut offered by miners in May and held out for more discount, he said.     China News Service reported yesterday that CISA halted talks because iron ore spot prices have been "seriously distorted", citing a statement issued by the association.     However, no such statement could be found on the association's website, and its official surnamed Wang said the report was not true and talks were ongoing.
