BEIJING, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd, in a phone conversation on Monday, exchanged opinions on relations between their two countries as well as the international financial crisis and climate change.     Wen spoke positively of the development of the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Australia.     He said China is willing to work with Australia to intensify coordination and cooperation, and meet the complicated global challenges in a bid to promote harmonious and sustainable development of the world.     The Australian prime minister lauded China's position and active role in handling the international financial crisis.     Rudd said the international community should strengthen cooperation to establish and improve the mechanism to guarantee the transparency and consistency of the international financial system.     Australia would like to work with China to reinforce exchanges and cooperation in international finance and in multilateral and bilateral fields, he added.

LANZHOU, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Inspectors had found poisonous chemical in the Sanlu infant formula produced by one of its partner producers in northwest China's Gansu Province, an official said on Sunday.     Two out of the 12 samples randomly selected from the Sanlu milk powder produced by the Haoniu Dairy Co., Ltd. in Jiuquan City had tested positive for melamine, said Xian Hui, vice-governor of Gansu.     "The products of Haoniu have been sealed up," he said.     The test was conducted after the Sanlu Group, a leading Chinese dairy producer based in northern Hebei Province, admitted that it had found some of its baby milk powder products were contaminated with melamine, a chemical raw material strictly forbidden by the country to be used in food processing.     As of Saturday, a total of 432 babies throughout the nation have been sickened with kidney stones after drinking the contaminated milk powder.     Haoniu was founded in 2002 with the registered capital of 51 million yuan (7.45 million U.S. dollars). Its production was in line with the Sanlu standard and its products use the Sanlu trademark.     As of Saturday night, Gansu has reported 102 cases of infant kidney stone caused by the Sanlu milk powder. Two babies have died, Xian said.     The province has so far seized altogether 164,000 packs of Sanlu milk powder.

BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin is urging to cultivate more farmers who not only plant but also know the ABCs of technology and management, since the country is seeking new ways to promote rural development.     "We should foster many more 'new-style' farmers who are educated and who know techniques and the basics of sales and management," said Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, adding that rural areas should use urban development as a catalyst. BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will modify its temporary subsidy plan for quake survivors starting in September, with each survivor experiencing financial hardship to get 200 yuan (29 U.S. dollars) per month, a State Council statement said on Saturday.     "Life in most parts of the area will return to normal by September but, in some worst-hit areas, some people might still suffer difficulties. To help them, the government decided to continue financial assistance after the present policy ends," said the statement issued after a cabinet meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao. The quake, on May 12, left millions of people homeless and destitute.     The policy will cover such categories as orphans, the elderly and the disabled without family support, those whose relatives were killed or severely injured, those who were displaced and those whose residences were destroyed, it said.     Since the disaster, every needy survivor has been eligible to receive 10 yuan and 500 grams of food a day. The policy has covered about 8.82 million people but will end in August. The new system won't include any food allotment.     Some types of survivors could receive more than the minimum. Under the present policy, about 261,000 orphans, elderly and disabled without family support have received 600 yuan a month. Under the new policy, they will receive more than 200 yuan, the statement said, without elaborating.     The new policy will expire in November, the statement said. The experts were also told to locate sites where quake debris can be stored for long periods for later investigation and take measures to protect such sites.     The meeting endorsed an assessment report by central and provincial authorities, which listed 10 counties and cities, including Wenchuan County, Beichuan County and Dujiangyan City, as the worst-hit areas.     Another 41 counties, cities and districts were characterized as heavily affected and other 186 were said to be moderately affected.     The first two categories will be covered by the national reconstruction plan, it said.     The 8.0-magnitude quake has claimed nearly 70,000 lives, injured more than 374,000 people and left another 18,340 missing.

BEIJING, May 28 -- China's economy can maintain a steady growth above 8 percent for a relatively long period because of a stable society, a vast market and ample capital, said Cheng Siwei, an economist and former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.    "China's economy can stay in the fast developing track if we work hard and pay enough attention to existing problems," Cheng said at a three-day forum with the theme of "Economic globalization and the choice of Asia: transition, growth and welfare" Wednesday in Shanghai.     "Social stability is crucial to economic development while China has a market of 1.3 billion people, which creates a huge consumption power," said Cheng. "Meanwhile, China's foreign reserves have reached US.68 trillion, and it has built up an ample capital pool."     China also beefed up its efforts to improve education and expand its coverage, which paved the way for sustainable economic development, he said, but added that there were problems China could not afford to ignore. The income of urban residents has tripled that of rural households while the purchasing power in cities was four times larger than that in rural areas.     China faced increasing pressure to protect the environment and in securing raw materials and resources for its economy. It means appointing them (US bond managers) to manage our assets and we only gained a little bit of interest," said Cheng.
