BEIJING, August 1 (Xinhua) -- A senior Party official has called for constantly strengthening the entire capacity and competitiveness of China's film and television industry, so as to push the country's film and TV products to the world.     Great efforts must be made to innovate the sector, regarding both content and the form of film and TV works, the structure and mechanism of the industry, and the means of spreading film and TV works, said Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau. HANGZHOU, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged the country's enterprises to raise their international competitiveness by speeding up transformation and adjustment in line with the changing domestic and global economic situation.     During a three-day inspection and research tour in the booming southeastern Zhejiang Province, which ended on Tuesday, Li visited textile factories, electric machinery companies and high-tech enterprises to get a first-hand assessment of enterprise reform amid a new domestic and international market climate. I hope you will soon go back to your normal lives and build a better home."     At Dujiangyan Radio and Television Station, Li urged the technicians to repair the network as soon as possible to ensure that the people in the quake zone could enjoy radio and TV programs. Li hoped they could go deep into the front line of the quake and represent the feelings of the victims, soldiers and other relief workers.     "I believe you can create many artworks that will inspire the people affected by the earthquake," Li said.     He was accompanied by Liu Yunshan, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.     The death toll in the earthquake that jolted Sichuan Province and some other areas on May 12 rose to 69,107 as of Tuesday noon.

BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has ordered the armed forces and civil aviation department to deploy 90 more helicopters for rescue missions in quake-hit Sichuan province.     The decision was made at a late Wednesday evening meeting of the national quake relief headquarters held on a running train from Sichuan provincial capital Chengdu to Guangyuan city about 200 kilometers away. BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Some 53.2 million people hit the roads in China on Wednesday, the third day of the "golden week", said a Ministry of Transport (MOT) spokesman.     Although that figure was an increase of 5.1 percent year-on-year, it was 4.2 percent lower than Tuesday's 55.5 million, because most travelers began their journey in the first two days of the holiday, he said.     The "golden week" National Day holiday this year runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 5.     The spokesman said 740,000 medium-sized and large vehicles were used to move travelers around the country on Wednesday, compared with Tuesday's 760,000 vehicles. Relevant departments would conscientiously study and adopt them.     He added China was an agricultural country with the majority of its population in rural areas. Addressing issues on agriculture, the countryside and farmers would be taken as the fundamental work.     Since China launched its reform and opening up, the CPC Central Committee had held many plenary sessions to discuss agricultural and rural issues.     Facing new situations and tasks, the rural development system should be continually innovated, Hu said, adding rural reform remained the key to China's reform, and agriculture and rural development were still the strategic foundation of the country's development.     Promoting rural reform and development would bring the national economy and society into a new round of development, he added.     Hu asked the participants in the forum to contribute to the new socialist countryside construction by make in-depth study, identify and handle the protruding problems in rural reform and development in a timely manner, and raise relevant suggestions accordingly.     Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin and Xi Jinping, members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, also attended the forum.     On Sunday, the CPC Central Committee approved a decision on major issues concerning rural reform and development at the close of a four-day meeting, such as doubling the income of rural residents, boosting their consumption by a big margin and basically eliminating absolute poverty in rural areas by 2020.

BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), the country's largest oil producer, planned to cut its workforce by 5 percent in upcoming three years as its profits had been squeezed by heavy refining losses.     The oil giant had 1.67 million staff last year, which meant more than 80,000 of them would be laid-off within three years, Beijing News reported.     The move followed CNPC's earlier announcement to cut non-production spending by 10 percent from a year earlier, the paper said. The China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), the country's largest oil producer, planned to cut its workforce by 5 percent in upcoming three years as its profits had been squeezed by heavy refining losses.    CNPC's profit before tax dropped by 39 percent year-on-year to 56.4 billion yuan (8.3 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half year as a result of refining loss and windfall taxes on crude oil sales.     To reduce costs, CNPC halted or cut investment in 49 projects in June, saving the company up to 20.72 billion yuan.     PetroChina, CNPC's listed arm, announced last month to issue no more than 60 billion yuan to "satisfy the operational needs of the company, further improve its debt structure, reduce financing costs and supplement working capital."
