“It was incredible to watch a dream come true in a matter of hours as opposed to years,” Mix said.
“The database space over the last few decades has been a lonely place for customers,” said AWS CEO Andy Jassy during a friendly chat with AWS Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Ariel Kelman later in the day. Without naming names (although, come on, ten bucks says he was talking about Oracle) Jassy went on to decry the “lock in” mentality of the older database companies and promised attendees that AWS wouldn’t hit customers with a hard sell on a new multiyear contract right at the end of the quarter, under pressure to make its numbers.
“It was a great process for our community to compete with one voice, one proposal for the entire state, submitted by the private sector, to tell our story and not just use it to attract this investment from Amazon, but change perception of other companies,” he said.
“One was that we couldn’t actually physically possibly fit all of their requests into our campus,” said Hsieh, speaking today at the START conference in San Francisco.”There wasn’t enough room. But the other thing we realized is that all of the campuses I just mentioned, Apple, Nike, Google, were great for employees, but were actually kind of insulated, and didn’t really integrate or contribute to the community around them.”
“It’s big thinking that got Amazon in the position where they are today, and it’s big thinking that’s going to be required of other executives if they hope to survive the grocery wars.”
“Thank you Mr. President. Thanks for the opportunity today to spend the time to both learn and contribute to, I think, what is one of the most important dialogues, which is about modernizing our government with the latest technology, so that the people of America can benefit from it. So I think the first thing I took away is how important an agenda it is, to modernize technology. The second thing I think is for us to do our best work as an industry and in collaboration with the government to skill the people of the United States for the jobs of the future. Technology will play a role both in creation of the jobs and the skills. And then lastly I would say that we also need to increase American competitiveness and the two things that government can and has done is spending in big research — after all, all of the technology that we have today is because it started in fact in the government and the research institutions you funded — as well as the enlightened immigration policy. Of course I’m a beneficiary of that and I hope that we continue to be able to sort of really make sure that the American competitiveness is what helps us set policy.
