BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's premium revenue is expected to hit one trillion yuan (146.3 billion U.S. dollars) this year due to strengthened promotion and increasing demand, said a senior official here on Sunday.     The premium revenue grew at an annual rate of 30 percent from 460 million yuan in 1980, when insurance business began to enter into full swing in China, to hit 703.58 billion yuan in 2007, said vice chairman of the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) Zhou Yanli at the opening ceremony of an insurance exhibition.     The revenue in the first eight months this year rose 52.24 percent year on year to 713.40 billion yuan which exceeded the total of last year, he said.     The revenue for the whole year is likely to break one trillion yuan at the current pace, he predicted.     The development of China's insurance business had been halted for 20 years after the founding of the new China in 1949. After the opening up and reform initiated in 1979, the sector was on the way to the right track and entered into full swing.     The value of the industry assets totaled more than three trillion yuan, which is owned by more than 110 insurers, according to Zhou.     Despite of the progress, insiders noted the revenue growth is poised to slow down in the fourth quarter of 2008 and the first half of 2009 as insurers are expected to retain dividends to protect its profit margin which was hurt by stock investment returns slumps. That is likely to discourage the future premium growth.     China Life, the nation's largest life insurer, saw premium jump52.9 percent from a year ago to 23.44 billion yuan in September, much slower than the 93.7 percent growth in August. The combined revenue in the first nine months totaled 248.6 billion yuan, up 56.7 percent year on year, comparing with the 57.14 percent growth in August.

BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao paid visits to the Beijing Military Area Command and a local communication station of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) on Wednesday, just days ahead of the traditional Lunar New Year. Hu, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, first conveyed New Year greetings to the soldiers on behalf of the CPC Central Committee and the Central Military Commission.     This year's Lunar New Year falls on January 26.     He urged the PLA soldiers to promote military values and make further contributions to national defense and modernization. BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese exporters face an increased risk of not being paid for their goods as foreign banks run out of cash and some overseas importers evade paying debts, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) warned Monday.     "The cases of malicious debt evasion and breach of contracts by importers in certain countries or regions are on the rise," said the ministry in a notice. It attributed the phenomenon to the impact of the deepening global financial crisis.     The MOC urged local governments, guilds and overseas Chinese businesses to more closely monitor the credit of foreign importers.     Priority should be placed on tracking the credit ratings of foreign lenders, it said.     The ministry also called on local governments to support the development of export credit insurance and encourage exporters to carry such insurance by reducing premiums.     From January to November last year, China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation (SINOSURE) provided 56.5 billion U.S. dollars of guarantee for exporters against credit risks such as payment default. That is 63.6 percent higher than the same period a year earlier. The reason for the increase is that more exporters sought insurance, company figures show.     SINOSURE is China's only policy insurance company undertaking export credit insurance.     In that period, SINOSURE paid 210 million U.S. dollars of indemnities, up 174.5 percent from the same period of 2007.     In December, the insurer reduced credit ratings for a record 48countries, including the United States. A total of 191 countries were reappraised in December.

They emphasized the need for Asia-Europe cooperation to ensure the availability of environmentally sound energy at a reasonable price to support economic growth and that the latest technology should be intended to increase energy efficiency.     Leaders recognized that the impact of globalization is increasingly being felt by the people of ASEM members, and share a common interest in strengthening the social dimension of globalization and improving social cohesion.     To this end, leaders unanimously agreed to issue the Beijing Declaration on Sustainable Development.     The Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 7) was held in Beijing on 24 and 25 October 2008. The Meeting was the first gathering of the leaders of 45 members of ASEM since its second round of enlargement.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China voiced its strong dissatisfaction and stern opposition to an award from the European Union (EU) to a Chinese criminal.     "We express strong dissatisfaction and stern opposition (to the award)," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a written statement in response to the award on Thursday evening.     The European Parliament (EP), a supervisory and consultative organ of the EU, announced on Thursday it would select Hu for the Sakharov Prize.     On April 3, Hu was sentenced by the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court to 3.5 years imprisonment, with one year's deprivation of political rights.     The verdict said Hu, an unemployed father aged 34 and the holder of a college degree, libeled the Chinese political and social systems, and instigated subversion of the state, which is a crime under Chinese law.     "Hu is a convicted criminal who is now in jail for subverting the state", Qin said, noting the award to Hu, in disguise of "protecting the human rights," is fabricating facts and confusing truth and has fully exposed its political attempt to interfere in China's internal affairs and infringe upon the country's judicial sovereignty.     "The fact has already proved and will continue to prove that such an act can neither change the fact of China's social development, nor deceive the European people," Qin said.

BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. president-elect Barack Obama Saturday discussed in a telephone conversation relations between China and the United States and major international issues of common concern, including the ongoing global financial crisis.     In the telephone conversation, Hu expressed appreciation to Obama for emphasizing in his election campaign speeches the great importance of China-U.S. relations, and for advocating the strengthening of China-U.S. cooperation in jointly responding to global challenges and in sharing global development opportunities.     Hu pointed out that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries 30 years ago, bilateral relations have generally kept developing despite setbacks, scoring hard-earned achievements and bringing about tangible interests to both nations.     As the largest developing nation and the largest developed nation, China and the United States share extensive common interests on issues related to world peace and development, and both assume important responsibility in this regard, Hu said.     In the new historical period of time, China is willing to maintain high-level exchange with the United States and also contacts at all levels, continue strategic dialogue with the United States, increase exchange and cooperation between the two countries in all fields, and strengthen the exchange of opinion and coordination with the United States on major international and regional issues, the Chinese president noted.     China and the United States should respect each other and accommodate each other's concerns, and appropriately settle sensitive issues between the two countries, particularly the Taiwan issue, in order to promote the China-U.S. relations of constructive cooperation to a higher level, he said.     Speaking on the same occasion, Obama said that China is a great nation and that China's development and success meet U.S. interests.     On today's international arena, U.S.-China relations are relations of vital importance. China is willing to discuss with other participants in the summit how to adopt powerful measures to reestablish market confidence as early as possible, how to prevent the global financial crisis from proliferation and spreading, and how to diminish its impact on real economies, in a bid to avert a possible global economic recession, Hu said.     The global financial crisis has led to the exposure of many deep-hidden drawbacks of the global financial system.     The international community should earnestly sum up the lessons from the global financial crisis and launch necessary reforms of the global financial system, on the basis of sufficient consultation among all interested parties, Hu said.     In particular, efforts should be made to explore in an in-depth way solution of such major questions as how to strengthen international financial supervision and regulation, how to improve the system of international financial organizations and how to improve the international monetary system, the Chinese president said.     Obama said that settlement of the global financial crisis requires close cooperation by governments of all countries, expressing the hope that the United States and China will strengthen cooperation at the world economic summit planned for November 15 in Washington.

TEHRAN, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Iran and China signed a 1.76 billion U.S. dollars deal here on Wednesday for the initial development of Iran's North Azadegan oil field, the official IRNA news agency reported.     The deal was signed between China National Petroleum Corporation(CNPC) and the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) in the presence of Iranian oil minister Gholam Hossein Nozari and Chinese ambassador Xie Xiaoyan, IRNA said.     The North Azadegan oil field which located in Iran's western province of Khuzestan has an estimated reserve of six billion barrels of oil and can produce 75,000 barrels per day for 25 years, Nozari was quoted as saying.     Under the deal, CNPC is committed to developing the oil field in two phases, IRNA said.     Oil output of the North Azadegan oil field will reach 150,000 barrels per day when both the two phases of the project are finished, Nozari added.     According to IRNA, the deal is in the form of buy-back terms, based on which CNPC hands over the operation of the field to NIOC after development and receives payment from oil production for a few years to cover its investment.     The period for the development and reimbursement for the first and the second phase of the field would be about 12 and 17 years, Nozari said. 

BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao returned to Beijing Saturday night from a trilateral summit between China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK).     In a half-day meeting in Japan's Fukuoka, Wen, his Japanese counterpart Taro Aso and ROK President Lee Myung-bak discussed trilateral ties, the ongoing global financial crisis and other issues of common concern.     Before the meeting, Wen met Lee and Aso respectively, and discussed bilateral relations with them.     They issued a joint statement on tripartite partnership relations after the meeting.
