Asahi Breweries Ltd., Japan's largest beer producer, is targeting the Chinese milk products market with an all-around manner with its new milk factory being under construction in China's Shandong Province, company officials told Xinhua Saturday.     A milk company, which has been building the factory, was established in Laiyang city, Shandong Province, in April. It's the first time for a large-scale Japanese corporation to enter the Chinese integrated milk business in the fields of both production and sales.     The company is owned 90 percent by Asahi. Business of the new company will involve the entire process from raising cows to marketing, while products will be sold to major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Qingdao under Asahi's proprietary label, according to Asahi Breweries officials.     Price of the Asahi milk products will be about 50 percent to 100 percent higher than average local milk, and sales in the first year will be targeted at 1 ton per day, they said. BEIJING, May 30 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam will complete erecting markers along their land border by year end, a visiting Vietnamese leader said here on Friday.     In talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Nong Duc Manh, Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee general secretary, reaffirmed efforts to meet this deadline set in 1999. China and Vietnam signed a treaty in December that year delineating their 1,350 kilometers of frontier. They officially started to plant land markers in 2002.     The two countries finished their latest round of talks on land border demarcation in Beijing last week, vowing to speed up the work. They hailed the rapid growth of bilateral ties in recent years, citing Sino-Vietnam cooperation in trade, rule of country, regional and international issues, as well as problems left over from history.     Hu proposed China and Vietnam seek stronger ties in culture, education, science and technology, agriculture and youth exchange.     Manh echoed Hu's view, reiterating his country's efforts to work more closely with China in various fields.     Hu called for an early blueprint outlining a five-year trade cooperation between the two countries.     In response, Manh encouraged Chinese businessmen to invest in big projects in Vietnam and help his country develop in a sustainable manner.     Hu suggested a proper solution to existing issues between the countries on the basis of friendly consultation and mutual benefit.     Manh shared Hu's view and said the two countries should communicate promptly about their concerns.     They also exchanged views on party building and international issues.     After the talk, Hu and Manh witnessed the signing of several bilateral deals on protection and quarantine of animals and plants, as well as in other fields.     During Manh's four-day tour, he will also visit the east Jiangsu Province.

BEICHUAN, Sichuan, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Thirty-three more survivors were pulled out of debris in Beichuan county in southwest China on Friday as rescue efforts entered the fourth day since the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on Monday.     The total number of survivors saved in Beichuan in Sichuan Province rose to 13,595, rescuers said.     Beichuan, a county of about 160,000 people, is one of the worst-hit region, with 80 percent of the buildings collapsed and at least 7,000 lives lost.     A 46-year-old survivor, Peng Zhijun, had lived on cigarettes, paper napkins and his urine when he was buried in the rubble in the past four days. He was still sober-minded almost 100 hours after the quake.     Doctors said he suffered bone fractures in the left arm and slight injuries in the legs, but the other parts of his body were basically in good condition.     "Natural disasters cannot be avoided. I had to save me from myself," Peng told reporters Friday evening. She was unconscious and soldiers carried her on their backs to a nearby medical center.     A 72-year-old woman named Deng Zhongqun was found by soldiers after being stranded at her badly damaged hillside house. She had been injured by a falling girder and had eaten only nuts over the past four days.     "Thank goodness for the soldiers. I only weigh 65 kilograms and they carried me by turns on their backs, walking miles to reach the medical station," said Deng.     The death toll in Sichuan alone exceeded 21,500 while 14,000 others remained buried as of 4 p.m. Friday, vice provincial governor Li Chengyun said at a press conference.     He said that 159,000 people were injured in the massive earthquake and 4.8 million people had been relocated.     Friday's death toll rose by about 2,000 from that of Thursday.     Sichuan had experienced 4,432 aftershocks in the past four days, Li said.     The national death toll from the earthquake rose to 22,069 as of 2 p.m. Friday, while 168,669 people were injured, the latest government statistics show.     In addition to the deaths in Sichuan, 364 were killed in Gansu Province, 109 in Shaanxi Province, 15 in Chongqing Municipality, two in Henan Province, one in Yunnan Province and one in Hubei Province.     The central government allocated another 1.17 billion yuan (167million U.S. dollars) to the relief fund for quake-hit areas on Friday. This brought the disaster relief fund from the central budget to 3.41 billion yuan.     Public donations in both cash and goods to the quake-hit areas rose to 3.175 billion yuan as of 4 p.m. Friday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     China has mobilized more than 130,000 troops for rescue operations, who were desperate to excavate survivors despite the passing of the prime time for survivors' rescue -- 72 hours after the quake.     Foreign rescue teams from Japan, Russia, the Republic of Korea and Singapore have arrived in Sichuan to aid the disaster relief efforts.

BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese awareness of the welfare of its 83 million disabled population is rising as its capital prepares to host the Paralympics, which starts in two days.     During its seven years of preparation for the Olympics and Paralympics, Beijing took account of the needs of disabled people when updating public facilities.     Each of the city's 123 subway stations now has at least one entrance equipped with a wheelchair lift, according to the subwaycompany. Now it is different. Once you pass the exam, you are in," he said.     For those receiving compulsory pre-college education, the country has waived tuition and incidental expenses and given them free textbooks.     "Through these steps, many disabled children have been able to go to school and their families bore fewer financial burdens," said Ma Wanyu, a hearing disabled teacher in Jixi, a city in northeastern Heilongjiang Province.     Better education and preferential policies helped many disabledpeople find jobs and develop careers.     Radio host Yang Qingfeng, suffering from low vision, set up a radio program studio. Let's believe no difficulty will stop us once we join hands," he said.     Wu thanked doctors and nurses at the hospital for working day and night to save lives.     He then went to the Chengdu Railway Station, which has become an important distribution center of relief materials from home and abroad.     Wu talked with volunteers working at the station. "Coming from every corner of the country, you are an important force in the quake relief efforts. I hope relief materials could be delivered to thousands of needy people through your hard work."

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has clarified China's policies of continuing reform and opening-up and seeking peaceful and common development during his just-concluded visit to the UN headquarters, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Thursday.     During his 48-hour stay in New York, Wen attended the UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the 63rd annual general debate of the UN General Assembly.     Wen's visit was particularly significant in view of the increasingly complex international situation, the recent turbulence in the international economic and financial sectors, the sharp increases in oil prices and food supply shortage, and the whole world is keen to know in what direction China is heading after the Beijing Olympic Games, Yang told Xinhua. In this regard, he gave a comprehensive account of China's achievements in launching programs aimed at providing assistance to poor areas, and its contribution to global poverty reduction and South-South cooperation.     The Chinese premier put forward several proposals aimed at speeding up realization of the MDGs and called on countries around the world to pay more attention to the issue of poverty and to increase international aid.     Wen also unveiled six initiatives adopted by the Chinese government in its mission to assist developing nations, including setting up a development fund under the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), helping to train agricultural technicians, increasing agricultural exports, writing off debts and tariff, as well as offering assistance in the construction of clean energy projects.     Referring to the U.S. financial turmoil, Wen said China was confident of coping with the negative impact of the current crisis.     Confidence-building is even more important than gold and currency in the face of financial crisis, he pointed out.     China will strive to maintain the stability of its macro-economy, financial and capital markets, which is vital for the stability of the global economy, he said.     Wen also expressed China's willingness to cooperate with the United States in addressing the crisis, while calling on the international community to show solidarity and make joint efforts in maintaining the stability of the financial market.     Wen's opinions were echoed by the participants at the meeting, who agreed that China was an important player in stabilizing the world economy and financial system.     Talking about the recent tainted milk formula scandal in China, which has drawn world attention to food safety in the country, Wen stressed that the Chinese government attaches great importance to food safety and has adopted effective measures to ensure product quality and food safety.     He said China will never try to pursue corporate profit or economic growth at the expense of people's health and lives.     Wen noted that China's exports will not only meet international standards, but also meet the specific requirements of the importing countries.     China is willing to step up cooperation with the Unites States and other nations to ensure food safety, he added.     On China-U.S. relations, Wen said the two countries share broad common interests and that China and the United States are not rivals but partners in cooperation.     Wen called on both sides to enhance dialogue and communication, deepen mutual trust and cooperation, and efficiently handle sensitive issues such as the Taiwan issue, in order to ensure a healthy and stable development of bilateral relations.     This is in accordance with the fundamental interests of the two peoples and is conducive to world peace, stability and development, and also conforms to the trend of history, Wen said.     He said the Chinese government has always attached importance to china-U.S. relations and will go all out to maintain and develop the constructive and cooperative bilateral relations, irrespective of which party comes to power in Washington.     During his stay in New York, the Chinese premier also met with representatives of overseas Chinese associations and the heads of local Chinese-language media.
