BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Many countries around the world said the July 5 riot in northwest China is an internal affair of the country, and the Chinese government is handling the incident properly.     A spokesman for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Andrei Popov, said Xinjiang is an inalienable part of China, and the unrest is a purely internal matter of China.     The riot in Urumqi, the capital of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left 197 people dead and more than 1,680 injured.     Popov also expressed hope that China could soon restore stability in the region by adopting effective measures in accordance with the law.     He said Belarus expresses its deep sympathy to the people who suffered personal injuries or loss of property during the violence.     A spokesman for Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, Abdul Basit, said his country deplores any attempt to hinder China's progress.     "We deplore any such attempt" which tries to impede the progress which has been achieved by China in the context of social harmony, he said in a recent interview with Xinhua.     "We are committed not to allow any element in Pakistan to work against the interests of China because China's interests are Pakistan's interests. We cannot allow any activity that will damage China's interests," Basit said.     Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, in a statement issued shortly after the Urumqi riot, applauded the efforts of the Chinese leadership to promote the concept of harmony both at home, in Asia and the rest of the world.     Turkish Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan said his country supports the principle of resolving the issue within the framework of the territorial integrity of China.     The Turkish Foreign Ministry said the country highly values its relations with China and does not intend to interfere in China's internal affairs.     Thailand's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday the July 5 riot is a domestic issue of China and it believs China is capable of stabilizing the situation and restoring peace and harmony in Xinjiang.     Combodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said: "The Chinese government is taking appropriate measures to handle the issue."     The Foreign Ministry of Laos also issued a statement on the July 5 riot. It said Laos believes the measures the Chinese government has adopted to safeguard social stability are necessary and legitimate, and expressed hope the government could bring peace back to the region at an early date.  

BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao visited two primary schools in Beijing Sunday, joining children in language classes, games and kite painting, and wishing them a healthy and bright future.     Hu made the visits on the eve of the annual International Children's Day, which falls on Monday and will be celebrated by about 250 million children under the age of 14 across the country.     Hu first went to Jushan Primary School, where 90 percent of some 700 students are children of migrant workers from outside the Chinese capital. BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland confirmed 22 new A/H1N1 flu cases Saturday, bringing the total to 165, with no reports of deaths. Four new cases each were confirmed in Guangdong and Fujian provinces, three each were confirmed in Shanghai and provinces of Sichuan and Hubei, and two each in Zhejiang and Hainan provinces, the Ministry of Health said in the latest report. RAMALLAH, June 23, (Xinhua) -- With more than 30 years of involvement in the work related to the Middle East issue, China's new special envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike said on Tuesday that he'll employ his personal experience on the region to help fulfill his mission.     Wu arrived in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Tuesday, starting the second leg of his first regional tour as China's new special envoy.     Upon his arrival, Wu told Xinhua that Chinese and Palestinian peoples have a traditional friendship, China has been long supporting the righteous Palestinian cause, with the positive sign emerged recently on the peace issue, China, along with the international community, is concerning on how to revive the peace process and push forward the process toward a final solution.     With this concern, Wu said the aim of his trip is to know the attitude and response of all sides involved in the peace process on the newly emerged situation, lay out China's stance on the issue, and exert efforts to boost the process with all sides in coordination.     Touching upon the issue of the internal Palestinian dispute between factions, mainly the rival Fatah and Hamas, Wu said Palestinian unity is crucial to solve the Middle East issue.     "Hamas is a major Palestinian faction, which enjoys strong public support," said the envoy, adding that, "it'll be important if Hamas can take an positive attitude toward the peace process and involved in it."     Wu said China is willing to see the success of the internal Palestinian dialogue, and is ready to make efforts on helping Palestinians to achieve national unity.     Wu, former Chinese ambassador to Egypt, was appointed as the special envoy in March this year to replace Sun Bigan.     He has been director of the Department of West Asian and North African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and also the first Chinese plenipotentiary to the Arab League.     Citing his three-decade long diplomatic experiences in the region, Wu said that he witnessed both the disasters and losses caused by conflicts and the development, stability and opportunities brought by peace tracks between countries in the region.     "The contrast between the two tracks makes me convinced that military confront could not bring about the resolution of the Middle East issue, and the only way out is through peace negotiations," said the envoy.     Bearing the belief, the envoy said he will discuss both his personal experience and China's stance on the Middle East issue with all sides during his mediation, and actively involve in the peace process to fulfill his mission.

BEIJING, June 5 (Xinhua) -- China will continue its massive elimination of backward industrial facilities in 2009 to save energy and cut pollution in its bid to address climate change, the government said Friday.     China aims to close down small coal-burning power stations with a total generating capacity of 15 million kilowatts, according to an action plan approved by a joint meeting of the national steering committee for responses to climate changes and the State Council steering committee for energy-saving and emission control Friday.     China will continue to eliminate obsolete capacity in key industries, including 10 million tonnes in iron-making industry, 6million tonnes in steel industry, and 50 million tonnes in cement industry, said the plan examined at the meeting presided by Premier Wen Jiabao.     The meeting decided to adopt more measures, including stricter energy efficiency and environmental assessments, to control the expansion of industries that consumed excessive energy and discharged pollutants. (Xinhua/Pang Xinglei)    The government also called for the promotion of recycling and the use of energy efficient products, including subsidizing purchases of energy-efficient air conditioners, refrigerators and lamps.     Central and local governments would further increase investment in energy efficient projects.     In 2009, such projects are expected to reduce energy consumption equal to 750 million tonnes of standard coal usage. New sewage treatment projects will treat 10 million cubic meters of waste water.     The government would also publicize local government efforts to reduce energy consumption, improve supervision and enhance cooperation with international agencies to develop alternative energies and low-carbon technologies.     The government has set a goal to reduce energy consumption per 10,000 yuan (1,464 U.S. dollars) of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent from 2006 to 2010.     In the three years to 2008, energy consumption per unit of GDP fell 10.1 percent, according to the State Council. That means saving 300 million tonnes of standard coal and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 750 million tonnes.     Emissions of sulfur dioxide in the same period fell 8.95 percent, and chemical oxygen demand (COD), a measure of water pollution, was down 6.61 percent.

CHENGDU, Sichuan, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Monday expressed his appreciation of the world community for their strong support and valuable aid on the wake of last year's devastating earthquake in southwest China and called for further international cooperation in tackling major natural disasters.     "In face of grave natural disasters, the international community could support each other, enhance cooperation, join hands and jointly tackle the difficulties," Hu told some senior foreign diplomats who were invited to the capital of Sichuan Province on the anniversary of the quake.
