   KUWAIT CITY, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang arrived here Saturday evening on a four-day official visit.     Li said in a statement delivered at the airport that he is delighted to pay an official visit to Kuwait, noting that the relationship between China and Kuwait, especially in the fields of trade, energy, finance and culture, has witnessed remarkable growth since the two forged diplomatic relations in 1971. BEIJING, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's government on Friday pledged to make every effort to ensure the safe release of the crew of a Chinese fishing boat seized by Somali pirates off east Africa.     The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying it was still assessing the situation and trying to obtain more information on the vessel, which was overrun late on Thursday.     The ministry would work with organizations abroad to ensure the safe release of the crew, according to the statement.     The vessel, owned by Tianjin Ocean Fishing Company, was hijacked by pirates armed with grenade launchers and automatic weapons off the coast of Kenya and was being held off the southern Somali port city of Kismanyu, according to reports on Friday.     The 24 crew comprised 16 Chinese, one Japanese, three Filipinos and four Vietnamese, according to China's Ministry of Transport.     A Somali pirate leader reportedly said all the crew members were "fine".

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese leaders offered their Spring Festival greetings to the nation at a gathering to mark the coming Lunar New Year here Saturday.     President Hu Jintao chaired the gathering of more than 4,000 people from various sections of society.     On behalf of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council, Hu, who is general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, conveyed festival greetings to all Chinese people and his thanks to the friends of China across the world.     Premier Wen Jiabao, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, delivered a speech.     2008 was an extraordinary year for China, in which the country succeeded in fighting the severe winter weather, the May 12 earthquake, in hosting the Beijing Olympics and launching the Shenzhou-7 manned spacecraft and actively coping with the current international financial crisis, he said.     The achievements "demonstrated that no difficulty could defeat the great Chinese people and the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics will be broadened," he said.     The country will embrace the 60th founding anniversary of new China in 2009, Wen said.     Priority should be given to maintaining stable and relatively fast economic growth this year. This will be achieved through expanding domestic demand especially consumption demand, restructuring the economy and transforming the growth pattern, he said.     All will ultimately target maximally satisfying people's increasing material and cultural needs, he added.     In 2009, China will enhance and improve macroeconomic control efforts and carry out an active fiscal policy, as well as a moderately easy monetary policy, he said.     "We have the confidence and the ability to overcome various difficulties and achieve further development," he added.     The government will pool strength of the nation to do some practical things for the people, including expanding employment, improving the social security system, promoting medicare system reform, enhancing development of the cultural industry, and ensuring smooth rebuilding in disaster-hit areas, he said.     The government will also strive to solve people's housing difficulties and to provide satisfactory education that ensures no child drops out of school because of financial difficulties, he said.     Other leaders, including Wu Bangguo, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang, also attended the gathering.     Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year, is the most important traditional Chinese festival of family reunion. LIMA, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Foreign and trade ministers from the 21 member economies of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum on Thursday called for joint efforts to overcome the ongoing global financial crisis and revive the Doha Round trade negotiations.     "APEC economies are committed to implementing all necessary measures to bolster the real economy and boost investment and consumption levels in the region," said a joint statement released by the ministers after a two-day Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting in the Peruvian capital.     "Ensuring a rapid, coordinated and effective response to the current global financial crisis is the highest priority for APEC economies and will be the focus of attention" when APEC leaders meet on the weekend, said the statement.     The APEC ministers met in Peru during the "most difficult set of economic conditions" since APEC was created in 1989, it said.     Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Belunde, who chaired the meeting, said the ministers have reaffirmed their opposition to trade and investment barriers.     The ministers have agreed to continue to "strengthen consumption level in the region and expand trade activities," he said.     "We've decided to continue supporting the multilateral trade system, including the World Trade Organization, and to support a conclusion to the Doha trade round," he said.     Australian Trade Minister Simon Crean said the APEC ministers not only have reached an consensus to push forward the Doha talks but also agreed on the direction to conclude it.     Crean called on the APEC leaders to make commitment based on the action plan adopted by the G-20 countries in Washington earlier this month, noting that nine of the APEC members participated in the Washington meeting.     "Commitement at various levels" are required to deal with the financial crisis, he said.     U.S. Trade Minister Susan Schwab said world leaders should learn from the Great Depression in the 1930s and prevent a "prolonged and deepening" crisis from taking place.     Schwab noted that the G-20 nations had made it clear that trade barriers and protectionism will not be an option during the crisis and it is vital to conclude the Doha talks as soon as possible.     The world economies should "use trade in a positive way" to avert the crisis, she said.     "We will do everything we can" to push forward the Doha talks, she added.     Singapore Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang said APEC has yet to confront many challenges and the financial crisis is likely to top APEC's agenda next year when Singpore takes over as the chair.     The 20th APEC Ministerial Meeting started on Wednesday to make final preparations for the APEC Leaders' Meeting this weekend.  

BEIJING, Oct. 17 -- The government is ready to introduce a series of measures to cushion the impact of slower growth in foreign trade and industrial output caused by the global credit crisis, the vice-minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, said Thursday.     Speaking at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office in Beijing, Du Ying said that as the global economy has slowed, foreign trade volume, value-added output and the profit growth of industrial firms based in China's coastal areas have shown a downward trend in the second half of the year.     "The State Council is greatly concerned by the trend and is ready to introduce a series of measures," he said.     But the full impact of the global financial crisis has yet to be seen, he said.    "We must have a full picture of the difficulties and challenges," he said. The government has already taken several measures to combat the impact, including lowering the deposit reserve ratio, helping small- and medium-sized factories to upgrade their technologies, and introducing more favorable credit policies, Du said.     He said he is confident China can weather the storm.     "As in the past, China can overcome the challenges and difficulties and enter a new stage of development. I'm fully confident of that," Du said.     With the global financial crisis continuing to escalate, China - the world's fourth largest economy - has seen its major economic indexes slide.     The National Bureau of Statistics is due to release figures on Monday for the economic situation over the past three quarters.     Some analysts have forecast that GDP growth might drop further in the third quarter, from 10.1 percent in the second quarter and 11.9 percent for the whole of last year.     Yang Xiong, vice-mayor of Shanghai, said the city's industrial output growth fell to 6 percent last month from an average of 11.5 percent per month in the first three quarters.     The financial hub remains in good shape, however, partly due to investments in preparation for the 2010 World Expo, he said.     Zhao Kezhi, deputy governor of Jiangsu, said the province's trade figures were down 4 percent year-on-year in the first nine months.     Chen Min'er, vice-governor of Zhejiang, said the province had witnessed "individual" cases of company failures, but denied media reports of widespread factory closures.     Authorities will respond by trying to cut the tax burden on local firms, make more credit available and ensure a sufficient supply of land and power for manufacturers, Chen said, adding that now was a good time to weed out obsolete, polluting plants.     On Wednesday, Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the central bank, called for increased domestic consumption to counter the economic slowdown.     "Due to the impact of various factors, we may need to increase domestic demand," he told Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Vice-Premier Li Keqiang visited the 2008 China Beijing International Energy-Saving and Environmental Protection Exhibition on Monday.     Li, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, spoke highly of the achievements made by the country and the national capital in terms of energy efficiency and pollution reduction.     LI said China has large potential in the resources and environmental sector and it should focus on energy efficiency and environmental protection. BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's rural areas have the biggest potential in boosting domestic demand, said Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan during visits to the countryside concluded on Tuesday.     China should "especially place priority on tapping the rural market and developing the countryside" when spreading global financial crisis blunted the country's economic growth, said Wang.     He made the remarks when visiting towns, rural stores and farmers in central China's Henan Province on Monday and Tuesday.     More chain stores should be set up in the countryside to facilitate rural consumption, Wang said.     He also urged local officials to well implement policies to subsidize farmers' purchase of home appliances.     Financial institutions should develop more services targeting the need of farmers and rural enterprises, he said.     In its latest effort to boost rural consumption, China has decided to roll out a 13-percent subsidy nationwide for farmers who buy home appliances, starting from Feb. 1.     China has announced a 4 trillion-yuan (586 billion U.S. dollars) fiscal package to stimulate domestic demand.

The Palestine-Israel peace talks should resume at the earliest time, and efforts should be made to seek solution to issues related to the final status of Palestine on the basis of mutual-trust, so that an independent Palestinian state will be established as early as possible and the "two states" of Palestine and Israel will coexist peacefully.     5. The international community should increase mediating efforts for peace and promote a comprehensive, just and durable settlement of the Middle East issue.
