BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- China should further step up efforts to implement the plan to adjust and reinvigorate some of the country's key industries, according to an executive meeting of the State Council held on Wednesday.The meeting was chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.Progress has been made in 2009 for adjusting and promoting key industries, however the situation remained grave as weak global demand was still affecting China's economy and more efforts were needed to curb overcapacity in some industries, according to a statement released after the meeting.To combat the global economic downturn, China in 2009 adopted a massive plan to adjust and reinvigorate the country's ten key industries covering cars, steel, information technology, logistics, textile, nonferrous metal, equipment manufacturing, petrochemicals, shipbuilding as well as light industry.The implementation of the plan was a long-term task which should focus on the structure adjustment and development mode transformation of the ten industries, said the statement.Vigorous efforts should be made to expand domestic demand, optimize industrial layout, curb overcapacity, eliminate retrograde productivity, push company merger and restructuring, promote technology innovation and deepen reform to facilitate development mode change, it said.

BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) -- China's top quality watchdog said Sunday it has received complaints from consumers against HP laptops for quality problems.The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine pays close attention to the complaints and has started investigations, said a brief statement posted on the administration's website.The complaints included problems of overheated graphic chips and display screen problems.

The ice thickness could measure up to 40 cm, the station said.     The station warned of threats to port infrastructure, transportation and maritime operations. The most severe icing situation in the past 30 years in the coast off Shandong Province continued to worsen amid cold snaps. Sea ice appeared last week along the coastline of the Bohai Sea and northern Yellow Sea as cold fronts pushed the temperature down to minus 10 degrees Celsius    The worst sea ice in the past 30 years appeared from early Jan. along the coastline of the Bohai Sea and northern Yellow Sea as cold fronts pushed the temperature down to minus 10 degrees Celsius and below.     Sea ice in the Liaodong Bay nearly doubled to 71 nautical miles Tuesday from 38 nautical miles on December 31.     With another cold front expected this week, the sea ice along the coastline would further develop, the station said.

SHANGHAI, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- State Councilor Meng Jianzhu on Sunday called on the armed police to enhance capacities in tackling emergencies and terrorist attacks so as to ensure a safe World Expo.Meng, also Minister of Public Security and first political commissar of the Chinese People's Armed Police Force, made the remarks while watching a drill conducted by the armed police in the World Expo host city Shanghai.Armed police should focus their work on coping with complicated situations at any time and effectively bring under control all sorts of complexities, he said.Armed police should be rigorous, fair and civilized when enforcing the law, and at the same time be rational, even-tempered and conform to their professional standards, Meng said.China's armed police force had made contributions to safeguarding public safety during the 2008 Beijing Olympics and celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China last year, he said.The World Expo, to be hosted by China for the first time, is scheduled for May 1 to Oct. 31.
