UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of January.     China will perform its duty as the rotating Council president in an objective and fair way and work with other Council members to maintain international peace and security, said Zhang Yesui, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, in a recent interview.     China will do its utmost to make sure that the Security Council works in a smooth and efficient way, Zhang added.     The Security Council presidency rotates among the Council members in the English alphabetical order of their names. Each president holds office for one calendar month. China previously assumed the presidency in October 2008.     As a permanent member of the Security Council and the largest developing country in the world, China fully participates in the work of the United Nations and plays a constructive role, Zhang said.     Under the UN Charter, the Security Council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security in the world at large.     The Council has 15 members: five permanent members -- China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States -- and 10 non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms.     Also on Friday, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria began their two-year terms on the 15-nation Council.     The five new Security Council members were chosen after running uncontested races for the non-permanent seats, and they were duly elected by the 192-member General Assembly during a secret ballot at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in October 2009.     The five countries joined Austria, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and Uganda, whose terms on the Council end on Dec. 31, 2010.

JINAN, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's Yanzhou Coal Mining Co. Ltd. has got an official approval to take over Australian coal mining company Felix Resources, according to the company's bulletin on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Friday.     The deal involving 3.3 billion Australian dollars (3 billion U.S. dollars) in a contractual agreement reached by the two companies in August would be the largest of its kind between Chinese and Australian firms.     Yanzhou Coal said in the bulletin that the National Commission of Development and Reform has approved the company's bid to take over 100 percent of the stake in Felix.     The company said that after the takeover of Felix, it would obtain an approved coal reserve of 1.5 billion tons in Australia. Its annual coal output in Australia is expected to exceed 10 million tons, accounting for one third of the company's production in China.     Yanzhou Coal, headquartered in east China's Shandong Province, is listed on stock exchanges in Hong Kong, New York and Shanghai. It owns Austar Coal Mine in Australia, and mines in north China's Shanxi Province and Shandong Province, according to information on the company's website.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak met here on Thursday with Liu Qi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC.     The two sides exchanged views on the China-Malaysia ties and the relations between the CPC and the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) as well as economic cooperation between the two countries.     Liu said that the relationship between China and Malaysia develops smoothly since the two countries established the diplomatic ties 35 years ago, with increasing mutual trust in politics and remarkable achievements in economic and trade cooperation. BEIJING Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- United States President Barack Obama Tuesday said the U.S. government recognizes that Tibet is part of the People's Republic of China.     He also said that the United States supports the early resumption of dialogue between the Chinese government and representatives of the ** Lama to resolve any concerns and differences that the two sides may have.     "The United States respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China," Obama said at a joint press conference with Chinese President Hu Jintao at Beijing's Great Hall of the People.

BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- China should keep home prices from long time "abnormal increases" and divert profits made from home price hikes to the public through taxation, a senior property official said here Friday.     Dong Zuoji, director of land planning department of the Ministry of Land and Resources, said home prices would continue to rise as the land in the world's fastest-growing economy is becoming increasingly scarce, but the government should use taxes to give the added value of the land back to society.     "China hasn't seen overcapacity in real estate sector on the whole, otherwise home prices wouldn't have gained so much," he said while attending a meeting held in Beijing.     Dong said the government would increase land supply for subsidized homes and adopt measures to prevent developers from hoarding land.     The government would also guarantee land use for high-tech, high added-value enterprises while limiting that of backward production projects.     Due to a series of supportive measures adopted by the government, China's property sector rebounded strongly this year. BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang urged the country's railway departments to make efforts to promote safe railway transport and build quality railway projects to better serve socio-economic development.     Continuous efforts should be made to relieve railway transport capacity shortage and further expand the country's railways network, Zhang told a national railway conference.     "Although shortage of the country's passenger and goods transportation by railways has been eased to some extent, railways are still a bottleneck restricting economic development," Zhang said.     He stressed railway technology innovation, railway project quality and improvement of services for the convenience of passengers.     Zhang also urged railway departments make full preparations to cope with traffic peak during the upcoming holiday, when millions of people rush back home for the Spring Festival, China's Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 14.     In 2009, China's railways saw a passenger flow of 1.52 billion and transported 3.32 billion tonnes of freight, both breaking records. The country's railways are expected to see a record of 1.64 billion passenger trips in 2010, up 7.6 percent from last year.

BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of China's manufacturing sector stood at 55.2 percent in November, unchanged from the previous month, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) said on Tuesday.     It was the ninth straight month that the PMI reading stayed above 50.     A reading of above 50 suggests expansion, while one below 50 indicates contraction. The PMI includes a package of indices that measure economic performance.     In November, new order index and output index both held steady from figures in the previous month at 58.4 percent and 59.4 percent, respectively.     New export order index was 53.6 percent, down by 0.9 percentage points compared to November while purchasing price index rose by 6.5 percentage points to 63.4 percent.     Only three out of the 20 surveyed sectors reported a PMI index reading below 50, which were paper making and printing, oil processing, and beverages making.    

BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Premium of China's insurance companies hit 1.02 trillion yuan (149.6 billion U.S. dollars) in the first 11 months of this year, up 11.65 percent from a year earlier, according to the China Insurance Regulatory Commission Thursday.     The year would be the first year that China's insurance premiums exceeded 1 trillion yuan, data from the commission showed.     From January to November, premium of property insurance rose 22.28 percent year on year to 264.02 billion yuan, and that of life insurance was 757.66 billion yuan, an annual increase of 8.37percent.     The commission said the country's insurance firms were expected to eye combined profits at 46.09 billion yuan in the first 11 months, an increase of 57.45 billion yuan over the same period of last year.     Profits of the country's insurers nationwide was about 26.1 billion yuan in the first half, up 98 percent, the commission said in July.
