GUANGZHOU, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Exhibitors at China's largest trade fair may have one more question to ask when their paper-thin profits are further squeezed by a fast-rising yuan.     "Are you willing to pay by euro?" Lu Jia, a sales manager from a local leather manufacturer at the Canton fair, ventured the final but most crucial question to her Turkish client after introducing her products.     "Honestly, starting clearing of euro transactions rather than the U.S. dollar is not easy for my company, but it is still worth a try given a faster yuan rise this year," the 23 year-old Lu said at the trade-promotion event in Guangzhou, capital of the southern Guangdong Province.     The Chinese currency, the yuan, breached the 7-yuan mark for the first time on April 10, gaining 4.47 percent this year and 18.27 percent since the government unpegged it from the dollar in 2005.     "The yuan appreciation far outpaced our business growth. Its weekly increases were even beyond our anticipation," said Cao Xiaojian, the Jiangsu Shuntian Co., Ltd vice chairman.     Like most other Chinese exporters, Cao earns dollar-denominated profits, which are on the decline as the dollar becomes cheaper. He said that a 1 percent rise in the yuan would result in a sales profit decrease of 2 percent to 6 percent and things were even worse for the garment industry.     "Profit margins for home electrical appliances are between 3 percent and 5 percent and the rising exchange rate has eaten them away," said Zhang Yujing, China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products vice chairman.     Most exhibitors at the fair had to raise their offers due to higher costs in raw materials, energy and transport. Yet, they were afraid too high prices might scare away orders faced with sagging demand due to a global slowdown.     "A small rise in offers is acceptable," said Khaldoun Kalbouneh, general manager of the Furniture World, a trading company headquartered in Palestine. "But if the prices are too high, I may consider other markets."     Zhang said export-oriented sectors should improve their product mix, add more value and use financial tools to evade risks by the yuan rise.     As China's largest listed textile manufacturer, the Jiangsu Shuntian has pulled investment from textile into other industries like chemical, finance and securities, mines and high-tech, among others.     But many other companies prefer price increases. Chinese leading home appliance maker Qingdao Haier said it would re-set its prices with overseas sellers once the yuan gained more than 3 percent. The new price would be determined by the specific foreign exchange rate.     Feng Bin, Suzhou Chunlan Air Conditioner Co., Ltd general manager, said he hoped to transact via the euro. "The offer will expire in three months if the client sticks to the dollar. The exchange rate changes too quickly."     Experts say the change of currency clearing system is still not feasible for most exporters as it involves adjustment of export markets and bargain with foreign buyers. Besides, such services in domestic banks are too complicated, they say.     Therefore, some companies are considering financial derivatives as a way out. Shen Zhiming, Zhejiang Cathaya International Co., Ltd manager, said his company had bought currency futures for two years. "It is a real learning process for Chinese enterprises, a process for internationalization."     The China Import and Export Fair has two phases, from April 15 to 20 and April 25 to 30. BEIJING, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- China is likely to start monitoring ozone and particle pollution from next year as part of efforts to keep anti-pollution campaigns in force after the Olympics, an environmental official said on Sunday.     Fan Yuansheng, of the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), said the two pollutants had caused great concern and the MEP was making technical preparations to monitor them.     "We should be able to start regular monitoring of ozone and PM2.5 (particle matter) next year, which would lead to measures to deal with them," Fan told a press conference.     He was speaking in response to reports that China's environmental authorities had failed to include fine particles and ozone into their pollution measurements, causing ignorance of health damage caused by the pollutants. Health experts believe they are unhealthy to breathe and have been associated with fatal illnesses and other serious health problems.     Colorless ozone is also believed to cause respiratory problems and to affect lung functions.     There have been worries that the air in Beijing, the Chinese capital that will host the summer Olympic Games in five days, may be unhealthy for some athletes competing outdoors to breathe.     China has taken drastic anti-pollution steps, such as closing factories surrounding Beijing and ordering half of 3.3 million cars in Beijing off the roads, to try to clean the sky during the Olympics.     "These measures have been effective so far," said Fan, Director General of the MEP's Department of Pollution Control.     Beijing basked under blue sky this weekend after being blanketed in a humid haze for a week. The Beijing Meteorological Bureau said on Sunday favorable weather conditions and a series of anti-pollution measures had combined to clear the normal smog above the city.     Fan Yuansheng refuted allegations that China's air pollution standards were more lenient than World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.     Standards that China was using to control four major air pollutants - sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and particles - followed the WHO's "phase one" guideline issued in 2005, he said.     The WHO allows developing countries like China to begin from this guideline to eventually reach its stricter final goals, he said.     Fan said measures adopted to reduce pollution in Beijing for its hosting of the summer Olympics would stay in force after the event.     "Most of these measures are long-term ones and will remain after the Games. Not all the temporary measures will be retained after the Games, but they may provide clues for our future work," he said.     The Chinese government recently warned that more factories could be temporarily shut down and more cars could be restricted from the roads in Beijing if "extremely unfavorable weather condition" occur to deteriorate the air during the Games.     But many Beijing residents are more worried that air pollution could turn bad after the Olympics, with factories reopened, construction resumed and car no longer restricted.     Fan argued that the Olympics would leave environmental legacies to Beijing and China, which has spent billions to clean the environment polluted by rapid industrialization.     For example, the State Council, China's cabinet, has ordered all government cars to keep off the road for one day each week according the last figure of their plate number. This is a continuation of the temporary measures during the Olympic Games, Fan said.     The MEP has launched a research on how to further improve air quality in the entire northern China where Beijing is, since air pollution is not a problem of Beijing alone, he said.     Nearly 90 percent of coal-burning power plants in provinces neighboring Beijing have taken measures to reduce the emission of sulphur dioxide, and many vehicles have been upgraded to meet stricter emission requirements.     Lu Xinyuan, Director General of the MEP's Bureau of Environmental Supervision, said about 200 environmental inspectors have been sent to Beijing and five neighboring provinces to check enterprises on their anti-pollution work.     Meanwhile, 16 environmental groups based in Beijing on Sunday called on local motorists not to drive on Aug. 8, in order to help reduce pollution and road congestions when the Olympics open.     They further encouraged private car owners to use public transport as much as possible during the Olympics and the following Paralympics to "contribute a blue sky to Beijing."     The groups with over 200,000 members hoped the usage of private cars would be reduced by one million times if the campaign are well responded in the next two months, according to Yu Xinbin, member of the Global Village of Beijing, a non-governmental organization.

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese equities tumbled on Friday following a heavy slump overnight on Wall Street as concerns about the U.S. economic slump worsened.     The Shanghai Composite Index sank 3.29 percent, or 74.97 points, to 2,202.45. The key index has declined more than 58 percent this year and more than 63 percent from its peak in October.     In Shenzhen, the market fell 2.8 percent, or 209.4 points, to 7,264.2. Aggregate turnover expanded to 42.55 billion yuan (6.22 billion U.S. dollars) from 38.99 billion yuan on the previous trading day.     Losses outnumbered gains by 827-47 in Shanghai and 702-32 in Shenzhen.     Wall Street fell on Thursday with the Dow Jones down more than 340 points as disappointing jobless and retail data left investors doubtful of a U.S. economy recovery. The downturn partly contributed to a fall in China equities, analysts said.     Tracking the Wall Street loss, both the Hong Kong and Tokyo exchanges plunged more than 2 percent on Friday. CITIC Securities sank 3.18 percent to 18.56 yuan, Guojin Securities slumped 7.3 percent to 27.94 yuan, while Hongyuan Securities lost 4.79 percent to 13.92 yuan.     China Merchants Securities Co. Ltd. said in a prospectus released late on Thursday that it planned to issue 358.55 million A-shares on the Shanghai bourse. The application would be decided by market regulators on Monday.     If approved, it would become the second domestic brokerage IPO following Everbright Securities after a five-year suspension.

BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a major earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province has climbed to 9,219, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said here Tuesday morning.     The 7.8-magnitude quake has killed 9,219 people in eight affected provinces and municipality of Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Chongqing, the ministry said in a release issued at 7 a.m.. The Level I emergency plan covers the most serious class of natural disasters.     A disaster relief work group of the State Council, China's Cabinet, rushed to the quake-hit county of Wenchuan on Monday evening to coordinate the rescue and relief work.     Meanwhile, the ministry said strong winds and hailstorms lashed Hubei, Hebei and Jiangsu provinces from Sunday evening to early Monday morning, affecting more than 630,000 people.     In central China's Hubei Province, the hailstorms attacked 10 counties, affecting 515,000 people, collapsing 85 rooms of 33 households and damaging another 4,761 rooms as of 11 a.m. Monday. The direct economic loss was estimated at 385 million yuan (55 million U.S. dollars).     Hailstorms also lashed three counties of north China's Hebei Province on Sunday, affecting 92,100 locals and resulting in a direct economic loss of 7.65 million yuan.     In east China's Jiangsu Province, 24,000 people also suffered from strong winds and hails Sunday evening. CHENGDU, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Saturday the efforts to search survivors were continuing in the quake-hit areas, but the focus of work would be gradually shifted to the resettlement of residents and post-quake reconstruction.     Wen told Chinese and foreign reporters at a resettlement site in Yingxiu town, a worst-hit area in the May 12 quake, that the biggest difficulty in resettling the quake-affected residents was the lack of tents.     A total of 15 million rooms were damaged or destroyed in the quake and a large number of people are in need of shelter, said the premier, who is paying a second visit to the quake-hit Sichuan Province.     "We have collected the tents nationwide and got aid from international community, but tents are still lacking," Wen said.     The Chinese government has ordered domestic tent manufacturers to produce and transport 30,000 tents to the quake zone each day and 900,000 within a month, Wen said.     The production of movable plank houses should also be accelerated to ensure the quake-affected people resume a normal life within three months, Wen added.     Efforts should also be made to ensure no big epidemic after the disaster, the premier said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R Front) speaks during an interview with journalists from at home and abroad, in Yingxiu Town of Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, May 24, 2008, during his second inspection tour of quake-hit areas in Sichuan after May 12 when the 8.0-magnitude quake happened.     Enough epidemic prevention staff and medicine supply should be ensured, he said.     Wen said another problem confronting quake-relief workers is that the chances of secondary disasters still exist. "The search and rescue operation has been conducted in every village."     The central finance had earmarked tens of billions of yuan for the relief work, Wen said. A 75-billion-yuan (about 10.7 billion U.S. dollars) post-quake reconstruction fund had been set up and more money would be added to it in the next two years, he added.     Before the reporters, Wen expressed sincere thanks to the Chinese worldwide, including compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as the leaders, governments and people of other countries for their concern, sympathy, aid and help.     "Facing such a powerful quake, we welcome international reporters to the quake zone," Wen said. BEIJING, June 6 -- Shareholders of China Vanke Co, the country's largest publicly traded property developer, have approved a decision to spend 100 million yuan to rebuild homes in quake-stricken Sichuan.     The company has been under fire from netizens since the earthquake after Wang Shi, its high-profile chairman, announced the real estate giant would donate 2 million yuan to the quake-hit areas and told his employees not to donate more than 10 yuan.    In the face of the ensuing barrage of criticism by the media and netizens, Wang apologized on his blog. At yesterday's meeting, he apologized to shareholders as well: "I want to apologize unconditionally to all shareholders, I won't try to defend myself."     Wang also admitted his comments about quake donations have damaged Vanke's brand image and he was sorry for that.     As a lesson from this episode, Wang said, Vanke would have a spokesperson in the future and try to desist from doing anything that hits its share prices, as it did this time. Workers rebuild a road between quake-hit Dujiangyan city and Wenchuan county."If Vanke's performance suffers because of my personal comments, I will resign immediately," said Wang.     Some shareholders, however, worry the apology may have come too late. "As a public figure, he should learn from this experience," said a shareholder who preferred not to be named.     Analysts said the meeting and Wang's apology will take some pressure off Vanke.     "It is not easy for a public figure like Wang Shi to apologize - either in public or in front of shareholders," said Zhang Luan, an analyst from Haitong Securities. Zhang said the decision of the shareholders to clear the funding also reflects the company's determination to contribute to the relief work in a big way.     Vanke's investments in Sichuan will be made over the next three to five years, Vanke had said in a previous statement to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.     The May 12 earthquake in Sichuan province destroyed 5.4 million homes and damaged 21.4 million, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs. More than 12 million people left homeless by the earthquake will have to be relocated.     "Vanke may build anti-quake homes there to broaden its property development," Bloomberg quoted Liu Xihui, a real estate analyst at Pingan Securities Co, as saying. "More developers may follow suit."     Vanke rose 4.7 percent to 20.5 yuan in Shenzhen trading on Wednesday. The stock has dropped 29 percent this year after almost tripling in 2007. Trading was suspended yesterday because of the meeting.
