BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Vice President Xi Jinping expressed the hope to further boost exchanges between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the French Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) here Friday.     "As ruling parties of respective countries, the CPC and UMP both face the challenges from domestic reform and economic globalization," Xi told Patrick Devedjian, UMP general secretary, during their meeting here. BEIJING, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao warned on Saturday that the global financial turmoil will make it harder for China to maintain the pace of its economic development in the near future.     China is under growing tension from its large population, limited resources and environment problems, and needs faster reform of its economic growth pattern to achieve sustainable development, said Hu when addressing members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.     The nation should maintain a stable and relatively fast economic growth, accelerate structural readjustment for sustainable development, and stick to reform and opening up, said Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.     Efforts should be made to solve problems that concern the people's fundamental interests, in order to achieve healthy and rapid economic and social development and improve people's living, the CPC chief said.     Hu also underlined the importance of efficient resource utilization and environmental protection in China's industrialization and modernization strategy, and asked for the overall development in both rural and urban areas.     The nation should not only seek fast and sound economic growth, but also promote the comprehensive development of society and its people, said Hu.     He also noted that with the spread of the global financial crisis, China is losing its competitive edge in the world market as international demand is reduced.     International competition is fiercer than ever and protectionism has started to increase in investment and trade, said Hu.     In October, China's export growth slowed to 19.2 percent from 21.5 percent in September.

LIMA, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday gave a brief outline of the country's future development to the business community of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).     Addressing the APEC Chief Executive Officers (CEO) Summit, Hu said China will continue to follow the Scientific Outlook on Development by putting people first and making development comprehensive, balanced and sustainable.     "We will unswervingly pursue reform, improve the socialist market economy and build systems and institutions that are dynamic, efficient, more open and conducive to scientific development," Hu said.     China will follow a new path of industrialization with Chinese characteristics and transform the mode of economic growth, he said. Hu said here Thursday that China is willing to make concerted efforts with Latin American countries to establish a comprehensive cooperative partnership of equality, mutual benefit and common development    Instead of relying heavily on higher consumption of resources, China will achieve development by making scientific and technological progress, improving the quality of the workforce and developing innovative management, he added.     Since the beginning of this year, China has taken robust measures to address the complex changes in the international economic environment and the severe challenges of major natural disasters.     "We have strengthened macroeconomic regulation in a timely way," Hu said, adding "The fundamentals of the Chinese economy have not changed."     "The steady and relatively faster economic development in China is in itself a major contribution to upholding international financial stability and promoting world economic development," he emphasized.     Between January and September this year, China's gross domestic product grew by 9.9 percent and the three major demands of investment, consumption and export all grew by over 20 percent.     However, since September, with the spread and development of the financial crisis, difficulties confronting China's economic development have become more and more obvious, Hu said.     The growth rate of China's export has begun to decline and industrial production and corporate profits have been adversely affected to varying degrees, he added.     "In view of this and in order to boost economic development, the Chinese government has strengthened macroeconomic regulation in a timely way and decided to follow a proactive fiscal policy and a moderately easy monetary policy," the president said.     China has lowered the required reserve ratio, cut the deposit and lending rates and eased the corporate tax burdens, he added.     China has recently adopted even stronger measures to generate greater domestic demand, Hu said.     He said the central government has decided to invest an additional 100 billion yuan (14.6 billion U.S. dollars) this year to accelerate projects related to people's livelihood, infrastructure, the eco-environment and post-disaster reconstruction.     This is expected to generate a total of 400 billion yuan (58.4 billion dollars) of investment nationwide, he pointed out, adding between the fourth quarter this year and the end of 2010, investment in these projects alone will reach nearly 4 trillion yuan (584 billion dollars).     Implementation of these measures will give a strong impetus to China's economic development, Hu said.     Hu arrived here on Wednesday for a state visit to Peru and the Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting of APEC scheduled for Nov. 22-23.

DESTROYER WUHAN, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese naval fleet en route to the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia for an escort mission against pirates completed its first replenishment at sea Tuesday.     The fleet, two destroyers and a supply ship, has entered the Indian Ocean after a four-day voyage which set sail from China's southernmost island province of Hainan.     In the afternoon, the supply ship Weishanhu successfully refueled the two destroyers Wuhan and Haikou with several hundred tons of oil, an operation that an official for fleet support described as "highly efficient."     The fleet will cruise for about 10 days before arriving in the Gulf of Aden to join a multinational patrol in one of the world's busiest sea lanes endangered by surging piracy.     The recent pirate attack on a Chinese fishing vessel has raised great concern of the Chinese government and people. Statistics showed that some 1,265 Chinese commercial vessels have passed through the gulf so far this year and seven have been attacked.     The UN Security Council has adopted four resolutions calling on all countries and regions to help patrol the gulf and waters off Somalia since June. The latest resolution authorized countries to take all necessary measures in Somalia, including in its airspace to stop the pirates. BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's economy is in good shape despite the changing economic environment, and it will maintain stable and relatively fast growth, National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) chief Ma Jiantang told Xinhua on Sunday.     "The fundamentals of China's economy remain unchanged despite the changing world economic environment," the new NBS director said. "We should be confident about the country's economic outlook."     The world's fastest economic growth rate, successful commodity price controls, increasing foreign exchange reserves and good employment rates were the factors to support the economic fundamentals, said Ma.     The consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, eased to 4.6 percent in September from the same period last year. It hit a 12-year high of 8.7 percent in February.     The country's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 9.9 percent in the first three quarters, 2.3 percentage points down from the same period last year.     The slowdown was a result of combined effects, including the global financial crisis, the world economic downturn and severe domestic natural disasters, Ma said.     However, he said, "We should be confident about the country's economic outlook." The country had rich resource reserves, great market potential, vigorous enterprises and the government had strong macro-control abilities.     The government had made a series of macro-economic policy adjustments against the changing economic environment, which would guarantee a steady and sound economic development, he said.

BANGKOK, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The first Chinese charter plane organized by Chinese government landed Saturday afternoon at U-Tapao airport, some 180 kilometers from Bangkok to bring back home Chinese tourists stranded in Bangkok due to anti-government protestors' siege of the two Bangkok airports.     The first flight from China Eastern Airlines, a A300 airplane, arrived at about 4:30 p.m. local time (0930GMT) at the small and crowded military airport to board 261 passengers back to Shanghai. It will be followed by four other charter planes, from the China International Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines.     The five planes will take the first batch of some 1,400 stranded Chinese back to Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, hopefully to take off on late Saturday. The total number of the affected travelers could hit 300,000 as the two airports remained closed, Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said Saturday.     The total of stranded Chinese, including those from Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, was estimated at about 4,000, according to the Chinese Embassy here.
