MOSCOW, July 24 (Xinhua) -- A senior delegation led by Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng met with Russian officials on Friday and Saturday over the sudden closure of a market in Moscow.     On June 29, some 150 Chinese merchants and a large quantity of their goods were seized in a crackdown on smuggling at the Cherkizovsky Market, Moscow's biggest wholesale market.     The market was subsequently closed, causing heavy economic loss to the Chinese merchants who operate businesses there. No word has been given as to when the market will reopen.     Gao stressed the China-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation during his consultations with Deputy Director of the Russian Federal Migration Service, Yuri Buriak, Deputy Economic Development Minister, Andrei Slepnyov, and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Borodavkin.     Gao also spoke of the recent state visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Russia, the upcoming regular China-Russia Prime Minister's meeting in Beijing in October, and celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.     He said under such circumstances, China and Russia should try to maintain their friendship and mutual trust, and properly handle problems arising from the development of bilateral ties.     Non-governmental trade between China and Russia has its complicated historical origins, Gao said, and the remarkable contributions of Chinese merchants to the economic prosperity of Russia, especially during difficult times, should be taken into consideration.     He said against the backdrop of the current global financial and economic crisis in particular, to deal with the abrupt shutdown of the Cherkizovsky market appropriately and scrupulously would be mutually beneficial to China and Russia.     China has no objections to Russia's crackdown on smuggling, he said, but Moscow should effectively protect the property and dignity of Chinese businessmen.     Russian officials from relevant ministries and departments all agreed that the market shutdown would not affect the long-time friendship between the two countries.     They also emphasized that the shutdown was aimed at smuggling and not against the Chinese merchants, who make up less than 40 percent of all the merchants there.     The Russian side also urged the Chinese merchants to comply with laws, and said the Moscow municipal government had started to help merchants move their goods.     Slepnyov said a collective work plan against "grey customs clearances" will soon be studied.     Gao, who arrived in Moscow on Wednesday, was accompanied by a delegation comprising of officials from the ministries of commerce and foreign affairs, the General Administration of Customs, and trade officials from Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.     The delegation has also held negotiations with the Investigation Committee of the Prosecutor General's Office, the Federal Customs Service and the Moscow municipal government.

HANGZHOU, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said Saturday his country welcomes Chinese investors.     Zardari made the call during his visit to Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, the first leg of his ongoing China tour. The infrastructure alone will require an initial investment of 110 billion U.S. dollars.     Chinese fruit preservers can also play a crucial role in Pakistan as about 40 percent of Pakistan's fruit can not be moved to other places due to the lack of freezing vehicles, according to Pakistani officials, who commented on the basis of anonymity.     Zardari was paying his fourth visit to China since taking office last September.     He attributed his frequent visits to the intent of bringing back home China's experience in development. LAS VEGAS, the United States, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- A record number of Chinese businesses and manufacturers are participating in the annual exhibition of Chinese products in the United States, in a way to show their confidence in the U.S. market and American consumers, a senior Chinese official said here on Monday.     Inaugurating the "China Brand Show 2009" in the Las Vegas International Convention Center, Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan said the Chinese government pays much attention to the difficulties its economy is facing amid the global financial crisis.     "Ever since November last year, the Chinese foreign trade has been going down for a consecutive nine months, which complies with the world trade situation in general," said the official.     Stressing that both China and the United States are each other's essential trading partner, Zhong said that the two countries had committed to open more to trade and investment and fight protectionism at the recent China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue, held in Washington, D.C. in July.     On China's domestic efforts to tackle the global economic recession, Zhong said the government has rolled out a huge economic stimulus package, and China's stabilizing and promising economic trend has contributed to the global confidence in an early economic recovery.     "China's GDP enjoyed a 7.1-percent growth in the first half of 2009, bringing the economic slump starting from the fourth quarter last year to an end," said the vice minister.     According to organizers of the annual show, more than 200 enterprises from China are participating this year, to showcase their products during the three-day event that ends on Wednesday.     The show also serves as a promotion event for the 106th China Import and Exports Fair, to be held in Guangzhou from Oct. 12 to Nov. 4 this year, officials said.     The China Import and Export Fair, the country's number one trade fair, has become a platform for enterprises from different countries to do business and one of the key channels for foreign companies to enter the Chinese market.

BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator said Wednesday that China will promote social exchanges with Myanmar to boost bilateral ties.     "We attach importance to and support friendly exchanges and cooperation between social groups and organizations in China and Myanmar, which will contribute to the development of bilateral ties," said Zhou Tienong, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, in a meeting with a delegation from a government-supported organization from Myanmar.     Zhou, also president of the Chinese Association for International Understanding, briefed the eight-member delegation on China's political and economic situation, its measures in tackling the global downturn and pledged to boost economic and trade cooperation with the international community, including Myanmar. TAIPEI, Aug.15 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Morakot has killed at least 124 people and left 56 missing in Taiwan as of 10 p.m. Saturday, according to local disaster response authorities. Another 45 people were injured after the typhoon, the worst on the island in nearly five decades, wreaked havoc across central and southern regions.     Sixty-six people died in Kaohsiung, 25 in Tainan, 16 in Pingdong, six in Chiayi, seven in Nantou, three in Changhua and one in Yunlin.     Nearly 23,700 people have been evacuated, and almost 5,000 are taking refuge in 170 sheltering camps.     Morakot has caused more than 12 billion New Taiwan Dollars (365million U.S. dollars) in damages to agriculture and forestry. Among the worst-hit regions are Pingdong, Kaohsiung and Tainan.     People from a wide range of social sectors in Taiwan have donated cash and materials worth millions of New Taiwan Dollars to support the disaster-relief work.
