BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday paid visits to three best-known senior intellectuals living in Beijing, honoring his own promise to call on these over-90-year elders once every year.     The three were linguist Ji Xianlin, founder of China's space industry Qian Xuesen, and "China's Madame Curie" He Zehui, who is the widow of China's Father of A-bomb Qian Sanqiang (1913-92). Ji turns 97 on August 6.     Ji, a former deputy president of the prestigious Beijing University, is known for his translation works and fruitful study on Sanscrit and other ancient Indian languages, speaks good English and German, and can read French and Russian.     In their talks, Wen exchanged views with Ji on issues like the relief efforts for the deadly May 12 Earthquake, foreign language education, and the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing.     "Our history has always witnessed disasters like floods, droughts and earthquakes, but our nation has never been collapsed, and quite the contrary, (our nation) has become stronger and stronger after these disasters," said the premier, who is also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau.     Ji agreed with Wen and he said in reply, "It is same for a nation and a person. Disasters train will of a person and a nation, as well." Wen even organized some experts to assist Qian in research projects.     In their meeting, the premier informed the scientist of the country's progress in space industry, such as the forthcoming launch of the Shenzhou-7 manned spacecraft, the Second Phase of the Moon-orbiting Program, and the country's ambitious plan to build large passenger aircraft.     Wen attributed China's achievements in science and technology to the decades-long efforts made by the elder generation Chinese scientists.     The premier echoed Qian that China still lags behind in many key sectors. DUSHANBE, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon and Prime Minister Akil Akilov on Saturday pledged to develop all-round cooperation with China while meeting separately with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.     In his meeting with Rakhmon, Yang expressed his gratitude for Tajikistan's aid and support for China's earthquake relief. BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's securities supervisor said on Friday that the heavy slump on the country's equities market was caused by a combination of factors, both domestic and foreign.     These included a need for internal correction, increasing uncertainties on the global markets and frequent natural disasters, China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) spokesman said at a press conference.     The unsound mechanism and structure of the country's equities market worsened the situation and widened the range of the correction, he said.     The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.56 percent to 2,450.61 points on Friday, closing out the week slightly higher after five days of losses. The key index has tumbled nearly 60 percent from its peak in October.     However, the trend of a steady and healthy performance would remain unchanged, he said, as the country's economy maintained steady and fast growth.     CSRC would study the emerging problems, promote the improvement of basic systems and optimize the structure of fund raising, he said.     CSRC would also adjust new share supply in line with market demand, enhancing the market mechanism in regulation.     The commission has slowed new share issues this year in an effort to brake the steep index declines as any mention of new share offering would cause a sharp plunge in the index.     From January to July, CSRC only approved the new offering (at least 100 million shares) of four companies, which raised a combined 64.32 billion yuan (9.38 billion U.S. dollars). Both the frequency and amount decreased, by 64 percent and 49 percent respectively, compared with the same 2007 period.     The commission would join with the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission to set up a real-time monitoring system to supervise transfer of the state-owned shares.

JIUQUAN, Gansu, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The crew of China's Shenzhou-7 space mission is scheduled to meet the press at 17:30 on Wednesday.     In addition, the headquarters of China's third manned space mission will hold another press conference at 14:30 Wednesday.     The crew, who will conduct the first Chinese space walk, is waiting for a launch window at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern Gansu Province.     Depending on weather, the launch is scheduled between Sept. 25 and 30. The spaceship has been finished docking with the rocket recently.    The Shenzhou-7 spacecraft will send three Chinese astronauts who will make a historical spacewalk.     Six Chinese astronauts are ready for the mission, three pilots who will finally be aboard and three substitutes.     However neither the military or the mission's headquarters has officially released their identities, even though many local websites had reported various stories on six favorites.     According to the headquarters' release, three pilots and three substitutes said they were fully confident to successfully accomplish the mission.     After three hours of tests and safety examinations in the last rehearsal on Monday, the mission has been given the green light.     Scientists working for the mission said on Tuesday that the carrier rocket of the spacecraft was ready to be fueled, bringing the launch to the countdown status.

SANYA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on Friday pledged to make concerted effort to promote the traditional friendship and practical cooperation between the two countries.     China sees Tanzania as its all-weather cooperative partner and the healthy development of bilateral relations could be treated as a model for China's sincerity and cooperation with Africa and all developing countries, Hu told Kikwete during their talks in this southern China seaside city.     To further the bilateral all-round cooperation, Hu proposed the two countries strengthen political trust, keep high-level contacts and dialogues in various forms, expand mutually beneficial trade cooperation, facilitate exchanges in the areas of education, culture, sports, public health, tourism and media, and encourage contacts among local governments, social organizations, women and youth of the two countries. KUNMING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines (CEA) will offer compensation of up to 400 yuan (57 U.S. dollars) to passengers affected in flights where pilots deliberately turned their aircraft around.     Passengers whose flights were canceled will get 400 yuan compensation. The plane never came after waiting for seven hours at the airport.     She was offered a ticket change at 4 p.m. on April 1 and received 400 yuan compensation.     CEA finally admitted on Monday that some pilots on the 21 flights deliberately turned their aircraft around while in flight.     It originally said the incidents were due to poor weather. However flights with other airlines flying the same routes landed on schedule during the same period.     The airline has suspended the pilots. Further probing is underway, said an announcement on the company's website.

BEIJING, May 21 -- China's tax authority has cut or waived a tax levy, offered a tax refund, and reiterated the tax concession on donations related to the earthquake in Sichuan Province as means of helping to support victims.     Losses suffered by companies and individuals due to the 8.0-magnitude earthquake can be tax deductible, the State Taxation Administration said in a notice on its Website.     As of 6pm yesterday, the number of people killed by the devastating quake has reached 40,075 while 247,645 people have been injured and there were still 32,361 people unaccounted for.     The supplies donated by overseas governments, individuals and companies are exempted from import taxes (including Valued Added Tax and Customs Duties), the tax authority said.     People whose tax-paid autos or ships have been destroyed in the quake can apply for a refund of Vehicles and Vessels Usage Tax for the period from the date they were destroyed until the end of the year. Normally auto and ship tax is prepaid at the beginning of the year.
